For the past seven years we have taught a subject entitled Network Software and Management (NSM) for both computer science and electrical engineering students. We discuss the evolution of this subject syllabus in response to the changing requirements of the workplace environment, ever improving technology and the need to combine theory and practice in teaching subjects such as this. We used open source software exclusively in our laboratory exercises and we provide the rationale behind our choice of specific software packages.
We present the techniques and architecture of a knowledge based support system currently under development for risk analysis in software generation and reuse process. We describe the main components and their relationships. Another tool that supports risk reduction is for consistency management.. This tool a.nalyzes effects of changes and repairs. help both the developer and manager to accomplish their work more easily, effectively and accurately. In the following sections, an overview of risk management for software development and reuse and two knowledge based tools will be described: for risk assessment and consistency management. Consistency management is needed to check the proper operation of the system after corrective measure have been taken to resolve high risk items.
