The GPX1 Pro/Leu genotype may significantly increase the risk of bladder cancer and the increased risk may be modified by the Ala-9Val MnSOD polymorphism. The GPX1 genotype may further affect the disease status of bladder cancer.
A case of renal angiomyolipoma rapidly growing during pregnancy with tumor thrombus into the inferior vena cava is reported. Angiomyolipoma in a 31-year-old woman was incidentally found by ultrasonography. CT scan revealed a fat-containing tumor in the right kidney with 4 cm in diameter. The patient was followed at outpatient clinic without any treatment. Fifteen months later, the post-delivery follow-up CT scan showed that tumor size had grown up to 11 cm in diameter. Although laparoscopic right nephrectomy was tried, open transperitoneal right nephrectomy was performed because the tumor thrombus extending into the inferior vena cava was found during the laparoscopic procedure. Pathological diagnosis was angiomyolipoma of the kidney. There are several reports that indicate angiomyolipoma grows rapidly during pregnancy. Our case demonstrates that careful follow-up is required for angiomyolipoma in women with possible conception and delivery.
The effects of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20 : 5n-3) on essential fatty acid (EFA)-deficient rats were studied. After low growth and scaly dermatitis in the hind legs due to dietary EFAdeficiency were induced by feeding rats an EFA-free 25 %casein diet (25C) containing 30 % hydrogenated coconut oil with 1 % cholesterol (HCO CHOL) for 8 weeks, they received the 25C diet with 0.19 or 0.57 % EPA ethyl ester concentrate added, or 0.02 %or 0.38 % linoleic acid (LA, 18 : 2n-6) concentrate (Exp. I), and the HCOCHOLmeal including any one of 0.25, 0.50, or 1.00 % EPAconcentrate, and 0.12 and 0.48 % LA concentrate (Exp. II) for an additional 6 weeks. When EFA-deficient rats were fed the EPA in both experiments, body weight was gained to almost reach those of the 0.38 or 0.48 % I.A-fed group (control), and the dermal symptomsof the hind legs were relieved, though the degree of healing was less than those of the controls. The ratios of eicosatrienoic acid (20 : 3n-9) to arachidonic acid (20 : 4n-6) characteristically increased due to EFAdeficiency were reduced to the level of the control in the liver and heart by addition of the EPAconcentrate. Essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency symptoms develope in rats fed hydrogenated coconut oil (HCO)1'2) or HCOplus cholesterol (CHOL).3'4) Dietary EFA deprivation pro
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
