Morbidly obese women have a high incidence of elevated PTH levels after gastric bypass surgery. Low vitamin D levels did not constitute the only reason behind this finding. African-American women and women older than 45 years of age were at significantly higher risk of developing secondary HPT. In these populations, aggressive supplementation with calcium citrate and vitamin D should be implemented.
In the authors' institution, a laparoscopic bariatric surgery program with a very low rate of morbidity and mortality has been introduced. Operative time, hospital stay, and wound complications are reduced with the laparoscopic approach. The laparoscopic and open procedures are equally safe, with equivalent 30-day mortality, readmission, reoperation, and gastrojejunostomy leakage rates.
This study of laparoscopic cholecystectomy performance reveals a high gaze disruption rate in the current operating room work environment. Improvements aimed at reducing such disruptions-and thus potentially surgical error-should center on better instrument design and realigning the axis between surgeon's eye and visual display.
Collis gastroplasty combined with Nissen fundoplication is an effective procedure for patients with a shortened esophagus diagnosed intraoperatively during antireflux surgery. Patient satisfaction, postoperative quality of life, and QOLRAD score improvement after this procedure are comparable with those observed in patients treated with Nissen fundoplication alone.
Laparoscopic Heller myotomy offers excellent long-term relief of achalasia-related symptoms, namely dysphagia, and this was projected on a significant improvement in quality of life and patient satisfaction.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
