Esta pesquisa iniciou-se pela necessidade de estudos sobre a gramaticografia maranhense do século XIX e pela relevância do passado para a identidade do povo maranhense. Tendo em vista as condições desfavoráveis da educação no Brasil, em particular no Maranhão na primeira metade do século XIX, foi relevante a publicação dos corporada pesquisa, sendo estes: Compendio da Grammatica Portugueza, de Padre Antonio da Costa Duarte (1829); Grammatica Elementar da Lingua Portugueza, de Filippe Benicio de Oliveira Conduru (1850); Postillas de Grammatica Geral, Applicada á Lingua Portugueza pela Analyse dos Classicos(1862) e Grammatica Portugueza Accommodada aos Principios Geraes da Palavra Seguidos de Immediata Applicação Pratica(1871), de Francisco Sotero dos Reis. Dessa forma, objetiva-se verificar a presença de nacionalismo linguístico no corpo das obras em análise. A fundamentação teórica desse artigo estrutura-se nos estudos realizados por Cabral (1984); Ribeiro (2000); Orlandi (2000); Guimarães (2005); e Melo (2012). A metodologia fundamenta-se nos princípios da Historiografia Linguística, ao contextualizar a economia, o social, a política e a educação no século XIX, para compreensão do período. Assim sendo, como resultados finais, obteve-se a seleção de vocábulos que determinam a presença de nacionalismo linguístico no corpusanalisado. Dentre eles, palavras de matriz indígena, africana e substantivos próprios e adjetivos pátrios nacionais, assim como foi o processo de construção e inserção destes no cotidiano do povo maranhense.
