Introdução: As quedas são altamente prevalentes na população idosa e sua ocorrência aumenta com o avançar da idade, podendo trazer graves consequências como dependência e óbito. Objetivo: Identificar fatores que contribuem para a ocorrência de quedas em idosos. Metodologia: Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa realizada nas bases de dados Scientific Electronic Library Online, Literatura Latino-americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online e U.S. National Library of Medicine, entre os anos 2011 a 2020. A busca dos artigos foi realizada em julho de 2020, utilizando-se o descritor “quedas em idosos”. Resultados: Foram selecionados 49 publicações para leitura integral do conteúdo, os resultados demonstraram que os fatores para a ocorrência de quedas estão agrupados em intrínsecos, com destaque para o sexo feminino, baixa escolaridade, idade avançada, estado civil (viúvo ou casado), sedentarismo, presença doenças crônicas (diabetes e hipertensão arterial), polifarmácia e acuidade visual diminuída. E em fatores extrínsecos, dentre os quais estão a estrutura inadequada de pisos, escadas sem barras de apoio, degraus irregulares, uso de tapetes, iluminação imprópria, objetos ao chão, uso de calçados inadequado, hospitalização e institucionalização. Em geral, as quedas ocorrem no domicílio, pela manhã, no banheiro, quarto e quintal e nas ruas são caracterizadas por escorregões e tropeços. Conclusão: As quedas possuem causas multifatoriais, a avaliação do idoso é importante para que intervenções sejam propostas com vistas a melhorar a qualidade de vida por meio de orientações sobre ajuste do ambiente, planejamento de plano terapêutico e manutenção da capacidade funcional.
