In this study we explored the adaptation of transplant recipients in Turkey using the Roy Adaptation Model. A descriptive qualitative design was used with data collected from liver transplant recipients in either individual or group interviews between May 2009 and February 2010. Using deductive content analysis, four themes were identified in the data: physiological mode, self-concept mode, role function mode, and interdependence mode. Each theme included both adaptive and ineffective behaviors of liver transplant recipients. The findings of this study indicate that liver transplant recipients need information and support about their ineffective behaviors in all modes of the Roy Adaptation Model. The findings also support the use of a nursing model in the delivery of nursing care for liver transplantation recipients.
The results suggest that the Turkish scale has appropriate language, content, and construct validity. This scale can now be used to assess the symptom experience related to immunosuppressive therapy in Turkish organ transplant recipients.
This qualitative research study describes the experiences of child and adolescent liver transplant recipients and their parents during the patients' transition to adulthood. Data were collected from pediatric liver transplant recipients and their parents during individual interviews, and these were later analyzed using conventional content analysis. Seven main themes emerged: coping, self-management, body image, social relationships, academic life, work life, and live donors. Study results revealed that the patients who received liver transplants during their childhood and adolescence used both effective and ineffective strategies to cope with the difficulties they faced during the transition period into adulthood. The parents experienced many problems: on learning of their child's need for a transplant, parents were advised that they should consider becoming a live donor. This very difficult decision was a source of great stress and required serious consideration. After transplantation the parents wanted their children to have autonomy but could not encourage them because of concerns for their health.
Objectives: Liver transplant recipients must adapt to a new life after transplant. We report the effects of a support group on physical and psychosocial adaptation of liver transplant recipients.
Objectives: This study sought to investigate immunosuppressive medication adherence, therapeutic adherence, school performance, symptom experiences, and depression levels of patients having undergone liver transplant during childhood. Results: While the rate of adherence with clinical appointments was 55.5%, it was 33.3% with the diet (prescribed regime) and 44.4% with exercise. While 33.3% of the participants repeated a grade or were held back, 44.4% of them missed more than 20 school days. Of the symptoms, the recipients mostly experienced anxiety, restlessness, nervousness, fatigue, and difficulty in concentrating. The patients' mean depression score was 7.77 when they were compared to their healthy peers, the difference was not statistically significant (P > .05). Conclusions: In our study, the recipients' adherence with immunosuppressive therapy and clinical appointment was high. This study will provide data for the literature about pediatric liver transplant recipients' adherence with diet and exercise, and physiological and psychological symptoms such as fatigue and anxiety.
BACKGROUND: Medication adherence is important in reducing the rate of secondary stroke in patients previously given a diagnosis of stroke. Therefore, there is a need to examine medication adherence and the factors affecting it in these patients. This study aimed to examine medication adherence in patients with stroke and the factors affecting it. METHODS: This study adopted a descriptive and cross-sectional design carried carried out on 183 stroke patients. Data were obtained between January and December 2019 using a sociodemographic and clinical characteristics form, the Morisky's Questions -Self-Reported Measure of Medication Adherence, the Turkish translation of the Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire, the Nottingham Extended Activities of Daily Living Scale, and the revised Turkish version of Mini-Mental State Examination. RESULTS: The proportion of patients with high medication adherence was 33.9%. The sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of patients with stroke were found as not effective factors in medication adherence. Specific concerns and general overuse in the Turkish translation of the Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire were found as factors affecting medication adherence. The Nottingham Extended Activities of Daily Living Scale and its subscales were found to be not effective factors in medication adherence. CONCLUSION: According to the results, the proportion of patients with high medication adherence was low. Patients' concerns about the possible side effects of their prescribed medications and beliefs about the overuse of medications negatively affected their medication adherence. It is recommended that nurses evaluate patients' medication adherence and beliefs about medications during hospitalization, discharge, or home visits. Structured nurse-led intervention programs are needed to enhance patients' medication adherence and beliefs about their medications.
