A small amount of ionic liquid [bmim][BF(4)] was found to be an efficient aid for microwave heating of nonpolar dibenzyl ether in high temperature solution-phase synthesis of monodisperse magnetite nanoparticles. It was found to act as both microwave absorber and assistant stabilizer in the reactive process and was recovered and reused in successive reactions.

A new functionalized ionic liquid, 1-aminoethyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate was synthesized from 1-methylimidazole and 2-bromoethylamine hydrobromide. This ionic liquid was found to be an efficient scavenger for removing excess electrophiles, such as benzoyl chloride, p-toluenesulfochloride, phenyl isothiocyanate, and p-chlorophenyl isocyanate, in a solution-phase parallel synthesis. The resulting ionic liquid derivatives can be separated directly from the reaction mixture. Desired products were obtained with high purity. Only 1.5-2.0 equiv of this scavenger was needed with a sequestration time of less than 35 min. In addition, the used ionic liquid can be regenerated and recycled several times without significant loss of activity.

A clean, rapid and energy-efficient approach to solid-aqueous heterogeneous reactions was developed utilizing the synergistic effect of microwave and ultrasound irradiation. The dramatic acceleration in reaction rates might be explained by the removal of a passivation coating on the substrate particles and the resultant enhancement in mass and heat transfer.

Three-component Mannich reactions of aromatic aldehydes, anilines and acetophenone were efficiently catalyzed by a recyclable carboxyl-functionalized ionic liquid ([cmmim][BF 4 ]) in aqueous [bmim] [BF 4 ] under mild conditions. Twelve b-aminoketones were successfully synthesized in high yields and the catalyst can be recycled at least 6 times without significant loss of activity.
