Rational:Lymphoepithelioma-like hepatocellular carcinoma (LEL-HCC) is a rare variant of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). To date, few cases have been reported in the literature, and almost no report in analyzing the different features of LEL-HCC.Patient concerns:We describe a 37-year-old female patient with a 32 × 30 mm mass in the right liver.Interventions:Complete surgical resection of the lesion was performed.Diagnoses:Histopathological examination of the resected tumor revealed undifferentiated HCC cells with significant lymphocytes infiltration. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for AFP (alpha fetoprotein), hepatocyte, CK8, and glypican-3. The patient was diagnosed with LEL-HCC.Outcomes:The patient had a favorable clinical outcome, and was free from tumor recurrence after a 52-months follow-up.Lessons:Our case was the youngest patient of all the reported cases, and the third case who was infected with both hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). LEL-HCC is a rare variant of HCC, with a relatively favorable prognosis. Further research recruiting more patients is required to determine the accurate causes and mechanism of LEL-HCC.

Recent bacterial induced bleaching disease events of the commercially farmed brown seaweed Saccharina japonica has resulted in significant reduction in healthy sporeling supply. However, to date the host associated epimicrobial community shifts with the disease progression have not been characterized. We investigated the dynamic shifts in the composition of the epibacterial communities of S. japonica with disease progression using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. We found that the alpha diversity was significantly higher in the control group than in the infected group over disease progression (P < 0.01). There was a significant shift in the composition and predicted functions of the epibacterial communities in both control and infected groups. Indicator species, belonging to Stenotrophomonas, Pseudomonas and Sphingomona were significantly higher in the control group than infected group, suggesting that these taxa are associated with healthy S. japonica. In contrast, Vibrio, Pseudoalteromonas and Colwellia were keystone taxa in the infected group at 24 h, and thus maybe considered to be the secondary opportunistic pathogens. Our study describes the changes of epibacterial communities associated with the progression of bleaching disease in S. japonica. This new information not only extends our baseline knowledge of the S. japonica epimicrobiome, but also paves the way for developing measures to mitigate disease outbreaks for the sustainable aquaculture of S. japonica.

MCC/eisosomes are protein-organized domains in the plasma membrane of fungi and algae. However, the composition and function(s) of MCC/eisosomes in the filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa were previously unknown. To identify proteins that localize to MCC/eisosomes in N. crassa, we isolated proteins that co-purified with the core MCC/eisosome protein LSP-1, which was tagged with GFP. Proteins that co-fractionated with LSP-1:GFP were then identified by mass spectrometry. Eighteen proteins were GFP-tagged and used to identify six proteins that highly colocalized with the MCC/eisosome marker LSP-1:RFP, while five other proteins showed partial overlap with MCC/eisosomes. Seven of these proteins showed amino acid sequence homology with proteins known to localize to MCC/eisosomes in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. However, homologs of three proteins known to localize to MCC/eisosomes in S. cerevisiae (Can1, Pkh1/2, and Fhn1) were not found to colocalize with MCC/eisosome proteins in N. crassa by fluorescence microscopy. Interestingly, one new eisosome protein (glutamine-fructose-6-phosphate aminotransferase, gene ID: NCU07366) was detected in our studies. These findings demonstrate that there are interspecies differences of the protein composition of MCC/eisosomes. To gain further insight, molecular modeling and bioinformatics analysis of the identified proteins were used to propose the organization of MCC/eisosomes in N. crassa. A model will be discussed for how the broad range of functions predicted for the proteins localized to MCC/eisosomes, including cell wall synthesis, response and signaling, transmembrane transport, and actin organization, suggests that MCC/eisosomes act as organizing centers in the plasma membrane.
