RESUMO O termo Epigenética refere-se a alterações não genéticas, herdáveis e reversíveis que ocorrem à nível de expressão genica e não alteram a sequência de bases do DNA. Essas alterações, também conhecidas como epimarcas, são responsáveis por ditar quais genes serão transcritos e quais serão reprimidos e podem ocorrer no genoma de um indivíduo ou serem desfeitas a qualquer momento, podendo inclusive, acarretar o surgimento de algumas patologias, como tumores. Este estudo desenvolveu-se por meio de pesquisas bibliográficas, englobando 56 artigos científicos publicados entre 1989 e 2020. Sabe-se que os marcadores epigenéticos são extremamente complexos e essenciais, porém são flexíveis e pequenas alterações na manutenção das epimarcas podem acarretar processos indesejados. Os marcadores epigenéticos ligados às histonas, estão relacionados à susceptibilidade destas proteínas a sofrerem alterações pós-traducionais, como acetilação, metilação, fosforilação e ubiquitinação, que são responsáveis por formar regiões de eucromatina ou heterocromatina, modificando a acessibilidade da cromatina. A metilação do DNA, outro marcador muito importante, pode ocasionar diversas modificações bioquímicas que influenciam na ativação ou desativação genica, sendo, por exemplo, regiões ativas da cromatina são pouco metiladas.
