Sixty‐eight patients with carcinoma of the oropharynx, hypopharynx, and larynx were treated with combinations of preoperative irradiation and surgery. Fifty‐six had low‐dose preoperative irradiation, and 12 had high‐dose preoperative irradiation. This report evaluates the 2‐year survival, morbidity, wound healing, and local recurrence in relation to the type of surgery and to radiation dose and timing in these groups where applicable. These findings are compared to those in a similar group of 29 patients receiving surgery alone.
