Le présent article analyse la dynamique de l’innovation qui émerge et se développe dans certains espaces collaboratifs emblématiques qui sont à l’origine de la formation de véritables écosystèmes d’innovation. L’étude se concentre sur le cas de Communitech Hub à Waterloo (Ontario) qui est à l’origine de la formation d’un écosystème entrepreneurial performant. Les résultats mettent en évidence certains traits communs entre ces espaces collaboratifs, à savoir : la dynamique d’innovation dans ces espaces est orchestrée par des initiatives bottom-up menées par des groupes informels d’individus (« commoners ») qui articulent une série de « communs d’innovation » pour développer leur projet innovant collaboratif. D’après nos observations, la dynamique de l’innovation dans les espaces collaboratifs résulte de la séquence de communs suivante : 1) des communs sociaux 2) des communs symboliques, et 3) des communs de connaissance. Au départ, les commoners émergent en tant que groupe actif d’une communauté professionnelle et contribuent à la formation et au maintien d’un commun social basé sur l’ouverture et la fertilisation croisée d’un réseau de professionnels ; ensuite, les commoners s’impliquent en tant que noyau central d’une « communauté épistémique » qui élabore une vision partagée et créer un espace collaboratif pour développer leur objectif d’innovation ; une fois que l’espace collaboratif fonctionne, les commoners mettent en place diverses communautés pour partager, préserver et enrichir un certain nombre de « communs de connaissance ». Chacun de ces communs correspond à un mécanisme de gouvernance de l’action collective sur une ressource commune spécifique qui est un déterminant clé du projet innovant.
