Introduction of the second side chain and introduction of the tertiary alcohol function is achieved in one step by the reaction of the products (IIIa) and (IIIb) with the organo-metal reagents (IV) or (VII).
The reaction specified in the title affords the ketone (III) via nucleophilic addition/elimination at C(2) of the starting compound (I) along with the alkenes (IV) and (V).
