Structural-color films that feature unprecedented capabilities of both sensitive vapochromic and robust vapomechanical responses have been successfully developed. Based on these films' extraordinary properties, various structural-color actuators have been further fabricated and demonstrated, for example, a rotating pinwheel, an artificial blooming flower, and a worm-like walker with accompanying dynamic color alterations. These actuators exhibit fast, stable, and sharp color alterations together with non-fatigued and programmable motions, which can be used for sensing, communication, and disguise in soft robotics.
Nature provides much inspiration for developing soft millirobots. However, compared with smart and adaptations of lives in nature, these robotic systems still suffer from insufficiency of intelligence. Here, a new untethered soft millirobot with magnetic actuation in the head and function in the tail is presented via implementing control, actuation, and sensing directly in the materials, thereby endowing robots with multimodal locomotion and environment‐adaptive functions. Due to the soft and asymmetric structure, the millirobot not only shows robust multimodal locomotion, including controllable and transformable crawling, swinging and rolling, but also achieves an excellent capability of helical propulsion in water. Moreover, the robot also possesses outstanding obstacle‐crossing abilities, including helically propelling over obstacles (>2 body length), crawling within a 2 mm height tunnel and swinging through a 450 µm width channel. Furthermore, the robot can even squeeze its body to crawl through a tube easily via near‐infrared irradiation, which triggers the osmotic shrinking of its body. Notably, the robots also possess extraordinary environment‐adaptive functions, for example, leptocephali‐like optical camouflage in water, octopus‐like controllable delivery and variable appearance via visible color–shifting for interaction with the changing environment. These smart robotic systems would be of benefit in various fields via seamless integration of bioinspired design and smart materials.
Materials that respond rapidly and reversibly to external stimuli currently stand among the top choices as actuators for real-world applications. Here, a series of programmable actuators fabricated as single- or bilayer elements is described that can reversibly respond to minute concentrations of acetone vapors. By using templates, microchannel structures are replicated onto the surface of two highly elastic polymers, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyvinyl alcohol, to induce chiral coiling upon exposure to acetone vapors. The vapomechanical coiling is reversible and can be conducted repeatedly over 100 times without apparent fatigue. If they are immersed in liquid acetone, the actuators are saturated with the solvent and temporarily lose their motility but regain their shape and activity within seconds after the solvent evaporates. The desorption of acetone from the PVDF layer is four times faster than its adsorption, and the actuator composed of a single PVDF layer maintains its ability to move over an acetone-soaked filter paper even after several days. The controllable and reproducible sensing capability of this smart material can be utilized for actuating dynamic elements in soft robotics.
Rapid formation of a confluent endothelial monolayer is the key to the success of small‐diameter vascular grafts, which is significantly important for treating dangerous and even sometimes deadly vascular disorders. However, the difficulty to homogenously locate endothelial cells onto the lumen of small‐diameter tubular scaffolds makes 3D endothelialization greatly challenging. Here, novel shape‐morphing scaffolds enabling programmed deformation from planar shapes to small‐diameter tubular shapes are designed and developed by combining biocompatible shape memory polymer and electrospun nanofibrous membrane. Endothelial cells can be conveniently seeded and attached on the 2D surface of the scaffolds and subsequently self‐rolled into 3D organization at physiological temperature. Endothelial cell responses and functions are varied on the shape‐morphing scaffolds with different nanofibrous electrospun membranes as the inner layer, arisen from the inducement of scaffolds with different morphological, physical, and biochemical characteristics. Owing to excellent properties of the nanofibrous membrane fabricated by the coelectrospinning of poly‐ε‐caprolactone (PCL) and gelatin methacrylate (GelMA), the shape‐morphing scaffolds with a nanofibrous PCL/GelMA inner layer support desirable homogeneous endothelial cell attachment as well as the rapid formation of biomimetic cell–scaffold interaction and cell–cell interaction under the 3D cell culture condition, therefore offering a visible approach for facile 3D endothelialization.

We developed a linear ultrasound array-based real-time photoacoustic imaging system with a compact coaxial excitation handheld photoacoustic imaging probe for guiding sentinel lymph node (SLN) needle biopsy. Compared with previous studies, our system and probe have the following advantages: (1) the imaging probe is quite compact and user-friendly; (2) laser illumination and ultrasonic detection are achieved coaxially, enabling high signal-to-noise ratio; and (3) GPU-based image reconstruction enables real-time imaging and displaying at a frame rate of 20 Hz. With the system and probe, clear visualization of the SLN at the depth of 2 cm (~human SLN depth) was demonstrated on a living rat. A fine needle was pushed towards the SLN based on the guidance of real-time photoacoustic imaging. The proposed photoacoustic imaging system and probe was shown to have great potential to be used in clinics for guiding SLN needle biopsy, which may reduce the high morbidity rate related to the current gold standard clinical SLN biopsy procedure.
Effective contact between flexible electronics and soft biological tissues, which may have different surface curvatures, for medical applications has long been a challenge. Here, this study reports a strategy for preparing shape‐adaptable 3D flexible electronics by combining photothermally responsive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)/gold nanorods (PNIPAM@AuNRs) composite hydrogels with conventional flexible microelectrode arrays (fMEAs). The fMEAs‐functionalized composite hydrogels are shape‐adaptable and can accommodate different surface geometries. Triggered remotely in seconds by near‐infrared (NIR) light at a wavelength of 808 nm, the composite hydrogel layer is grafted on the back side of the fMEAs shrinks to induce a desirable shape transformation in the fMEAs. By patterning the responsive hydrogel layer, the fMEAs can exhibit planar‐to‐twisted structural transformations in response to an external stimulus as a result of differential shrinkage and their elastic moduli. This strategy not only enables fMEAs to modify their shape to remotely accommodate unpredictable shapes of different surfaces by irradiation with NIR but also provides multiple architectures of 3D fMEAs upon stimulation. These photothermally responsive composite‐hydrogel‐based fMEAs may provide new methods for achieving wearable and implantable devices and facilitate deeper investigations into biological systems.
