To compare microbial functional diversity in different oil-contaminated fields and to know the effects of oil contaminant and environmental factors, soil samples were taken from typical oil-contaminated fields located in five geographic regions of China. GeoChip, a high-throughput functional gene array, was used to evaluate the microbial functional genes involved in contaminant degradation and in other major biogeochemical/metabolic processes. Our results indicated that the overall microbial community structures were distinct in each oil-contaminated field, and samples were clustered by geographic locations. The organic contaminant degradation genes were most abundant in all samples and presented a similar pattern under oil contaminant stress among the five fields. In addition, alkane and aromatic hydrocarbon degradation genes such as monooxygenase and dioxygenase were detected in high abundance in the oil-contaminated fields. Canonical correspondence analysis indicated that the microbial functional patterns were highly correlated to the local environmental variables, such as oil contaminant concentration, nitrogen and phosphorus contents, salt and pH. Finally, a total of 59% of microbial community variation from GeoChip data can be explained by oil contamination, geographic location and soil geochemical parameters. This study provided insights into the in situ microbial functional structures in oil-contaminated fields and discerned the linkages between microbial communities and environmental variables, which is important to the application of bioremediation in oil-contaminated sites.
Mental workload (MWL) can affect human performance and is considered critical in the design and evaluation of complex human-machine systems. While numerous physiological measures are used to assess MWL, there appears no consensus on their validity as effective agents of MWL. This study was conducted to provide a comprehensive understanding of the use of physiological measures of MWL and to synthesize empirical evidence on the validity of the measures to discriminate changes in MWL. A systematical literature search was conducted with four electronic databases for empirical studies measuring MWL with physiological measures. Ninety-one studies were included for analysis. We identified 78 physiological measures, which were distributed in cardiovascular, eye movement, electroencephalogram (EEG), respiration, electromyogram (EMG) and skin categories. Cardiovascular, eye movement and EEG measures were the most widely used across varied research domains, with 76%, 66%, and 71% of times reported a significant association with MWL, respectively. While most physiological measures were found to be able to discriminate changes in MWL, they were not universally valid in all task scenarios. The use of physiological measures and their validity for MWL assessment also varied across different research domains. Our study offers insights into the understanding and selection of appropriate physiological measures for MWL assessment in varied human-machine systems.
The adsorption coefficient of racemic metalaxyl onto an agriculture soil was small and non-enantioselective. Biotransformation was the predominant pathway for the elimination of R-metalaxyl, while abiotic and biotransformation made a comparable contribution to the degradation of S-metalaxyl. Metalaxyl acid was the main transformation intermediate. The enantiomer fraction of metalaxyl decreased with an increase in its initial spike concentration or the presence of the co-constituents in metalaxyl commercial products. Under simulated solar irradiation, the presence of TiO2 promoted the overall transformation kinetics through enhanced biotransformation and extra photo-induced chemical reactions. The promotion was enantioselective and thereafter changed the enantiomer fraction. The results obtained in this study showed that some achiral parameters, although they have no direct impact on enantioselective reactions with enantiomers, can significantly affect the enantioselective transformation of racemic metalaxyl. Thus, our results indicate that the contribution of chemical interactions on the enantioselective transformation of chiral pesticides may be underestimated.
Growth and morphological evolution of hexapod-shaped Cu2O microcrystals is carefully studied via a γ-irradiation reduction route at room temperature and under ambient pressure. The products are examined by means of XRD patterns and FE-SEM images. The as-obtained hexapod-shaped Cu2O microcrystal is composed of six legs, whose adjacent legs are perpendicular to each other and each leg is composed of two perpendicular cross blades. A simple reaction system, excluding the influence of surfactant and thermal disturbance, would favor revelation of the inherent growth habit of Cu2O microcrystals under relatively mild experimental conditions. Furthermore, the effects of several factors on the final product and morphology are investigated.Key words: hexapod-shaped, γ-irradiation, cuprous oxide, morphological evolution.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
