Atomic clocks based on laser-cooled atoms are widely used as primary frequency standards. Deploying such cold atom clocks (CACs) in space is foreseen to have many applications. Here we present tests of a CAC operating in space. In orbital microgravity, the atoms are cooled, trapped, launched, and finally detected after being interrogated by a microwave field using the Ramsey method. Perturbing influences from the orbital environment on the atoms such as varying magnetic fields and the passage of the spacecraft through Earth’s radiation belt are also controlled and mitigated. With appropriate parameters settings, closed-loop locking of the CAC is realized in orbit and an estimated short-term frequency stability close to 3.0 × 10−13τ−1/2 has been attained. The demonstration of the long-term operation of cold atom clock in orbit opens possibility on the applications of space-based cold atom sensors.

Effects of particle size and physical effective fibre (peNDF) of rice straw in diets on chewing activities, feed intake, flow, site and extent of digestion and rumen fermentation in goats were investigated. A 4×4 Latin square design was employed using 4 mature Liuyang black goats fitted with permanent ruminal, duodenal, and terminal ileal fistulae. During each of the 4 periods, goats were offered 1 of 4 diets that were similar in nutritional content but varied in particle sizes and peNDF through alteration of the theoretical cut length of rice straw (10, 20, 40, and 80 mm, respectively). Dietary peNDF contents were determined using a sieve for particle separation above 8 mm, and were 17.4, 20.9, 22.5 and 25.4%, respectively. Results showed that increasing the particle size and peNDF significantly (p<0.05) increased the time spent on rumination and chewing activities, duodenal starch digestibility and ruminal pH, and decreased ruminal starch digestibility and NH 3 -N concentration. Intake and total tract digestibility of nutrients (i.e. dry matter, organic matter, and starch) and ruminal fermentation were not affected by the dietary particle size and peNDF. Increased particle size and peNDF did not affect ruminal fibre digestibility, but had a great impact on the intestinal and total tract fibre digestibility. The study suggested that rice straw particle size or dietary peNDF was the important influential factor for chewing activity, intestinal fibre and starch digestibility, and ruminal pH, but had minimal impact on feed intake, duodenal and ileal flow, ruminal and total tract digestibility, and ruminal fermentation.

Although the power conversion efficiency of perovskite solar cells has reached 25.5%, their long-term stability is still a barrier to commercialization. In this work, 1-methyl-3-(3′,3′,4′,4′,4′-pentafluorobutyl)imidazolium tetrafluoroborate (MFIM-2) ionic liquid and another two analogues were used as additives to study their interaction mechanism with the FAPbI 3 perovskite layer. The results reveal that MFIM-2 suppressed the formation of PbI 2 crystals during crystallization, enlarged the grain size, and reduced the defect density, which led to an increased photovoltage of 1.12 V and efficiency of 19.4%. Furthermore, the moisture stability of the solar cell devices was also improved. Devices with MFIM-2 retained above 83% of the original value after 35 days in an atmosphere with about 25% relative humidity, and the perovskite film with MFIM-2 showed no phase transition in a 10 month aging process. These results demonstrate that the additive strategy of the polyfluoroalkylated imidazolium salt is a promising way for simultaneously extending the lifetime and improving the device performance of the perovskite solar cells.

Structural and functional damages to mitochondria of frozen-thawed sperm are a typical cryoinjury, with mitochondrial permeability transition pore (MPTP) formation being the hallmark change. Mitochondria are both a primary synthesis site and principle target for melatonin; this compound can directly inhibit MPTP formation and therefore confer protection at a mitochondrial level. The objective was to determine effects of melatonin on MPTP opening, viability, motility, and oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) of frozen-thawed ram sperm. Ram semen was diluted in glucose-egg yolk buffer with 0 or 10 −7 M melatonin (frozen and frozen + melatonin groups, respectively) and slow frozen, with fresh semen as Control. In frozen-thawed sperm, melatonin inhibited MPTP opening and lactate concentrations and improved sperm viability, motility, acetyl-CoA concentration and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production. With regard to the underlying physiological mechanism, melatonin suppressed movement of citrate synthase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, oxoglutarate dehydrogenase complex, and F0F1-ATP synthase permeability from mitochondrial to cytosolic fractions induced by MPTP opening; furthermore, it increased mRNA expressions of respiratory chain complex components and activities of complexes I, II, III, and IV and thereby improved oxygen consumption capacity in frozen-thawed sperm. In conclusion, melatonin improved OXPHOS of frozen-thawed ram sperm, attributed to inhibition of cryopreservation-induced MPTP opening.

Fabric composites are widely applied as self-lubricating liner for radial spherical plain bearings owing to their excellent mechanical and tribological properties. Nevertheless, the poor interfacial strength between fibers and the resin matrix limits the performance of composites utilized as tribo-materials. To overcome this drawback, a mild layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly method was successfully used to construct hybrid fabric composites in the present work. In addition, this investigation addressed the effect of self-assembly cycles on the friction and wear behaviors of hybrid fabric composites under dry sliding condition. The results demonstrate that fabric composites with three or more self-assembly cycles have significantly enhanced surface activities and anti-wear performances. The results obtained in this work can provide guidance in the preparation of selflubricating liner composites and highlight how the LbL self-assembly techniques could influence the properties of hybrid fabric composites.

Asia, especially the temperate Sino-Himalayan region is one of the four major diversity centers of Indigofera. Pollen morphology of Indigofera species in the Sino-Himalayan region is poorly known. In this study, pollen morphology of 52 samples representing 43 Chinese Indigofera species and two varieties was examined using scanning electron microscopy to evaluate its taxonomic significance. Parasyncolpate pollen grains were described in Indigofera for the first time. Cluster and principal component analyses were conducted based on four quantitative and three qualitative pollen characters. Five groups were recognized within Chinese Indigofera in the cluster analysis, but only one can be separated by the first three principal components. The shape and size of pollen grains in Indigofera are highly variable. Consequently, both the characters lack any significant taxonomic value. The number of apertures, tectum architecture and perforation density shows some taxonomic significance. The pollen morphology exhibits obvious phylogenetic and biogeographical significance on large scales in Indigofera. Although pollen characters alone are insufficient to reconstruct the taxonomic relationships within Indigofera, palynological data can provide some useful information for the species-level revisions.
