In activities of art and design, material not only serves as a substantial body, but also implies emotional semantic correspond with human mind. Emotional semantic which extracted from material’s physical, chemical and emotion properties is originated from material’s innate senses. Emotional semantic is also expanded by manual senses and affected by such factors as culture in an age and aesthetic mentality. Close concern on the studies of emotional semantic of material will offer new thoughts and methods for art and design.

This paper analyzes the importance of materials in art design creation and classifies art design materials, emphasizing the sensory properties of materials, such as visual, touch, hearing, smell and taste, etc. Then the paper discusses the aesthetic applications of materials in art design, so as to provide artists and designers with theoretical reference and basis for reasonable choice in art design creation.
The use of intelligent double-skin facades, sometimes referred to as "double facades", is attracting increasing amounts of interests from the architects throughout the world, due to the characteristics such as ecology, durability, use of natural resources, etc. This paper is written from the architectural history point of view, and gives a brief description about the development of the intelligent double-skin façade systems, from the old storm windows to modern double-skin systems, and suggests further research possibilities in this field.
