In this paper, we present a novel approach for human action recognition with histograms of 3D joint locations (HOJ3D) as a compact representation of postures. We extract the 3D skeletal joint locations from Kinect depth maps using Shotton et al.'s method [6]. The HOJ3D computed from the action depth sequences are reprojected using LDA and then clustered into k posture visual words, which represent the prototypical poses of actions. The temporal evolutions of those visual words are modeled by discrete hidden Markov models (HMMs). In addition, due to the design of our spherical coordinate system and the robust 3D skeleton estimation from Kinect, our method demonstrates significant view invariance on our 3D action dataset. Our dataset is composed of 200 3D sequences of 10 indoor activities performed by 10 individuals in varied views. Our method is real-time and achieves superior results on the challenging 3D action dataset. We also tested our algorithm on the MSR Action3D dataset and our algorithm outperforms Li et al. [25] on most of the cases.

Local spatio-temporal interest points (STIPs) and the resulting features from RGB videos have been proven successful at activity recognition that can handle cluttered backgrounds and partial occlusions. In this paper, we propose its counterpart in depth video and show its efficacy on activity recognition. We present a filtering method to extract STIPs from depth videos (called DSTIP) that effectively suppress the noisy measurements. Further, we build a novel depth cuboid similarity feature (DCSF) to describe the local 3D depth cuboid around the DSTIPs with an adaptable supporting size. We test this feature on activity recognition application using the public MSRAction3D, MSRDailyActivity3D datasets and our own dataset. Experimental evaluation shows that the proposed approach outperforms stateof-the-art activity recognition algorithms on depth videos, and the framework is more widely applicable than existing approaches. We also give detailed comparisons with other features and analysis of choice of parameters as a guidance for applications.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have shown very promising results for various image restoration (IR) tasks. However, the design of network architectures remains a major challenging for achieving further improvements. While most existing DNN-based methods solve the IR problems by directly mapping low quality images to desirable high-quality images, the observation models characterizing the image degradation processes have been largely ignored. In this paper, we first propose a denoising-based IR algorithm, whose iterative steps can be computed efficiently. Then, the iterative process is unfolded into a deep neural network, which is composed of multiple denoisers modules interleaved with back-projection (BP) modules that ensure the observation consistencies. A convolutional neural network (CNN) based denoiser that can exploit the multiscale redundancies of natural images is proposed. As such, the proposed network not only exploits the powerful denoising ability of DNNs, but also leverages the prior of the observation model. Through end-to-end training, both the denoisers and the BP modules can be jointly optimized. Experimental results on several IR tasks, e.g., image denoisig, super-resolution and deblurring show that the proposed method can lead to very competitive and often state-of-the-art results on several IR tasks, including image denoising, deblurring and super-resolution.Index Terms-denoising-based image restoration, deep neural network, denoising prior, image restoration.
