Over the 6-month treatment period, NBP was effective for improving cognitive and global functioning in patients with subcortical vascular cognitive impairment without dementia and exhibited good safety.
Background and Purpose-There is evidence and international consensus on the advantages and potential of a polypill for established cardiovascular disease patients to improve adherence in the secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. This study aimed to estimate the numbers of stroke patients who would be eligible for the polypill strategy in China, and the suitable composition of a polypill, based on data of the China National Stroke Prevention Project. Methods-A total of 717 620 residents aged ≥40 years from 6 Chinese representative provinces were screened for prevalent stroke from 2011 to 2012 with an 84.4% response rate. Participants with a history of stroke received further investigation of risk factors and treatments. The potential need for treatment was classified according to the guidelines. Rates were standardized using the population composition of the Sixth National Population Census of China. Results-The standardized prevalence rate of stroke was 1.9%. Up to 93.1% of stroke patients were eligible for a polypill containing at least 2 types of medications, with 75.3% eligible for a statin and antiplatelet agent and 70.6% for antihypertensive and antiplatelet medications. Considering 3 therapies, 54% were eligible for antihypertensive, statin, and antiplatelet medications. The current treatment rate with all required combinations of separate pills was only 6.9%. Conclusions-A huge number of stroke patients in China require preventive therapy and would be eligible for a polypill. This study indicates that it would be reasonable to consider and assess the value of a polypill strategy to improve secondary prevention of stroke in China.
Alzheimer disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease in the world. The relationship between AD and homocysteine (Hcy) is contradictory.
A community-based investigation was conducted to find patients with AD in a vitamin B deficient population (≥55 years old) in Lüliang area in China. Venous blood samples were collected. Serum Hcy, folate, and vitamin B12 were measured. For each case, 4 controls were selected matched with age to evaluate the relationship between Hcy and AD.
The crude prevalence of AD among people ages 55 years or older in this area was 8.60%. There were significant differences in serum Hcy and B12 between the case and control groups. We found that the higher level of serum Hcy was associated with a high risk of AD, and higher education level, higher folate and B12 concentration were protective factors to AD.
Adjustment of diet structure and supplementation of folate and B12 may offer potential therapeutic measures in this area.
Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most malignant glioma and patients diagnosed with this disease had poor outcomes even treated with the combination of conventional treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation). Dendritic cells (DCs) are the most powerful antigen presenting cells and DC-based vaccination has the potential to target and eliminate GBM cells and enhance the responses of these cells to the existing therapies with minimal damage to the healthy tissues around them. It can enhance recognition of GBM cells by the patients' immune system and activate vast, potent, and long-lasting immune reactions to eliminate them. Therefore, this therapy can prolong the survival of GBM patients and has wide and bright future in the treatment of GBM. Also, the efficacy of this therapy can be strengthened in several ways at some degree: the manipulation of immune regulatory components or costimulatory molecules on DCs; the appropriate choices of antigens for loading to enhance the effectiveness of the therapy; regulation of positive regulators or negative regulators in GBM microenvironment.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
