BackgroundSelf-rated health (SRH), a subjective assessment of health status, is extensively used in the public health field. However, whether SRH can reflect the objective health status is still debatable. We aim to reveal the relationship between SRH and objective health status in the general population.MethodsWe assessed the relationship between SRH and objective health status by examining the prevalence of diseases, laboratory parameters, and some health-related factors in different SRH groups. Data were collected from 18,000 residents randomly sampled from the general population in five cities of China (3,600 in each city). SRH was assessed by a single-item health measure with five options: “very good,” “good,” “fair,” “bad,” and “very bad.” The differences in prevalence of diseases, laboratory parameters, and health-related factors between the “healthy” (very good plus good), “relatively healthy” (fair), and “unhealthy” (bad plus very bad) groups were examined. The odds ratios (ORs) referenced by the healthy group were calculated using logistic regression analysis.ResultsThe prevalence of all diseases was associated with poorer SRH. The tendency was more prominent in cardio-cerebral vascular diseases, visual impairment, and mental illnesses with larger ORs. Residents with abnormalities in laboratory parameters tended to have poorer SRH, with ORs ranging from 1.62 (for triglyceride) to 3.48 (for hemoglobin among men) in a comparison of the unhealthy and healthy groups. Most of the health-related factors regarded as risks were associated with poorer SRH. Among them, life and work pressure, poor spiritual status, and poor quality of interpersonal relationships were the most significant factors.ConclusionsSRH is consistent with objective health status and can serve as a global measure of health status in the general population.
Treatment of severe Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is challenging. We performed a phase 2 trial to assess the efficacy and safety of human umbilical cord-mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) to treat severe COVID-19 patients with lung damage, based on our phase 1 data. In this randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled trial, we recruited 101 severe COVID-19 patients with lung damage. They were randomly assigned at a 2:1 ratio to receive either UC-MSCs (4 × 107 cells per infusion) or placebo on day 0, 3, and 6. The primary endpoint was an altered proportion of whole lung lesion volumes from baseline to day 28. Other imaging outcomes, 6-minute walk test (6-MWT), maximum vital capacity, diffusing capacity, and adverse events were recorded and analyzed. In all, 100 COVID-19 patients were finally received either UC-MSCs (n = 65) or placebo (n = 35). UC-MSCs administration exerted numerical improvement in whole lung lesion volume from baseline to day 28 compared with the placebo (the median difference was −13.31%, 95% CI −29.14%, 2.13%, P = 0.080). UC-MSCs significantly reduced the proportions of solid component lesion volume compared with the placebo (median difference: −15.45%; 95% CI −30.82%, −0.39%; P = 0.043). The 6-MWT showed an increased distance in patients treated with UC-MSCs (difference: 27.00 m; 95% CI 0.00, 57.00; P = 0.057). The incidence of adverse events was similar in the two groups. These results suggest that UC-MSCs treatment is a safe and potentially effective therapeutic approach for COVID-19 patients with lung damage. A phase 3 trial is required to evaluate effects on reducing mortality and preventing long-term pulmonary disability. (Funded by The National Key R&D Program of China and others. Background: Health related quality of life (HRQL) is a research topic that has attracted increasing interests around the world over the past two decades. The 36-item Short Form (SF-36) is a commonly used instrument for measuring HRQL. However, the information on Chinese adults' quality of life is limited. This paper reports on the feasibility of using the Mandarin version of SF-36 to evaluate HRQL in the population of Shanghai, China.
We investigated immune-related long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) that may be exploited as potential therapeutic targets in anaplastic gliomas. We obtained 572 lncRNAs and 317 immune genes from the Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas microarray and constructed immune-related lncRNAs co-expression networks to identify immune-related lncRNAs. Two additional datasets (GSE16011, REMBRANDT) were used for validation. Gene set enrichment analysis and principal component analysis were used for functional annotation. Immune-lncRNAs co-expression networks were constructed. Nine immune-related lncRNAs (SNHG8, PGM5-AS1, ST20-AS1, LINC00937, AGAP2-AS1, MIR155HG, TUG1, MAPKAPK5-AS1, and HCG18) signature was identified in patients with anaplastic gliomas. Patients in the low-risk group showed longer overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival than those in the high-risk group (P < 0.0001; P < 0.0001). Additionally, patients in the high-risk group displayed no-deletion of chromosomal arms 1p and/or 19q, isocitrate dehydrogenase wild-type, classical and mesenchymal TCGA subtype, G3 CGGA subtype, and lower Karnofsky performance score (KPS). Moreover, the signature was an independent factor and was significantly associated with the OS (P = 0.000, hazard ratio (HR) = 1.434). These findings were further validated in two additional datasets (GSE16011, REMBRANDT). Low-risk and high-risk groups displayed different immune status based on principal components analysis. Our results showed that the nine immune-related lncRNAs signature has prognostic value for anaplastic gliomas.
The prevalence of endoscopically confirmed PUD in this Shanghai population (17.2%) is substantially higher than in Western populations (4.1%). The majority of individuals with PUD were asymptomatic.
NiO nanoparticles with average particle size of 25 nm were successfully prepared by anodic arc plasma method. The composition, morphology, crystal microstructure, specific surface area, infrared spectra, and particle size distribution of product were analyzed by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and the corresponding selected area electron diffraction (SAED), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET)N2adsorption. The experiment results show that the NiO nanoparticles are bcc structure with spherical shape and well dispersed, the particle size distribution ranging from 15 to 45 nm with the average particle size is about 25 nm, and the specific surface area is 33 m2/g. The infrared absorption band of NiO nanoparticles shows blue shifts compared with that of bulk NiO.
