Statistical and global characteristics of the 130.4/135.6 nm airglow intensity ratios in the nighttime ionosphere are investigated.• Intensity ratio observed from 400 km is shown to be a good proxy for typical peak height of the nighttime ionosphere between ~250-450 km.• Analysis of synthetic observations shows promising results for the use of the intensity ratios for global-scale ionospheric remote sensing.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
