Background Psittacosis, which is also known as parrot fever, is Chlamydia psittaci (C. psittaci) caused infectious disease. The clinical manifestations vary from asymptomatic infection to severe atypical pneumonia or even fatal meningitis. Early recognition of psittacosis is difficult because of its nonspecific clinical manifestations. Culture and gene probe techniques for C. psittaci are not available for routine clinical use, which makes the diagnosis difficult too. Although psittacosis has increasingly been recognized and reported in recent years, cure of severe pneumonia complicated with meningitis, with etiologic diagnosis aided by the use of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS), is still uncommon. So, it is necessary to report and review such potentially fatal case. Case presentation This report describes a 54-year-old woman with C. psittaci caused severe atypical pneumonia and meningitis. She presented with symptoms of fever, dry cough and dyspnea, accompanied by prominent headache. Her condition deteriorated rapidly to respiratory failure and lethargy under the treatment of empirical antibacterial agents, and was treated with invasive mechanical ventilation soon. She denied contact with birds, poultry or horses, but unbiased mNGS of both the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) identified sequence reads corresponding to C. psittaci infection, and there was no sequence read corresponding to other probable pathogens. Combined use of targeted antimicrobial agents of tetracyclines, macrolides and fluoroquinolones was carried out, and the patient’s condition improved and she was discharged home 28 days later. Her status returned close to premorbid condition on day 60 of follow-up. Conclusions When clinicians come across a patient with atypical pneumonia accompanied by symptoms of meningitis, psittacosis should be taken into consideration. mNGS is a promising detection method in such condition and is recommended.

Wheat powdery mildew is caused by Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (Bgt), a biotrophic fungal species. It is very important to mine new powdery mildew (Pm) resistance genes for developing resistant wheat cultivars to reduce the deleterious effects of the disease. This study was carried out to characterize the Pm gene in Qingxinmai, a winter wheat landrace from Xinjiang, China. Qingxinmai is resistant to many Bgt isolates collected from different wheat fields in China. F1, F2, and F2:3 generations of the cross between Qingxinmai and powdery mildew susceptible line 041133 were developed. It was confirmed that a single recessive gene, PmQ, conferred the seedling resistance to a Bgt isolate in Qingxinmai. Bulked segregant analysis-RNA-Seq (BSR-Seq) was performed on the bulked homozygous resistant and susceptible F2:3 families, which detected 57 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) variants that were enriched in a 40 Mb genomic interval on chromosome arm 2BL. Based on the flanking sequences of the candidate SNPs extracted from the Chinese Spring reference genome, 485 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers were designed. Six polymorphic SSR markers, together with nine markers that were anchored on chromosome arm 2BL, were used to construct a genetic linkage map for PmQ. This gene was placed in a 1.4 cM genetic interval between markers Xicsq405 and WGGBH913 corresponding to 4.9 Mb physical region in the Chinese Spring reference genome. PmQ differed from most of the other Pm genes identified on chromosome arm 2BL based on its position and/or origin. However, this gene and Pm63 from an Iranian common wheat landrace were located in a similar genomic region, so they may be allelic.

The characterization and antioxidant activity on Maillard reaction products (MRPs) derived from xylose and bovine casein hydrolysate (BCH) was investigated at 100 °C and initial pH 8.0 as a function of reaction time. The pH values and free amino groups contents of xylose–BCH MRPs remarkably decreased with the reaction time up to 8 h, whereas their browning intensities significantly increased (p < 0.05). After 4 h of heat treatment, the fluorescence properties of xylose–BCH MRPs reached the maximum. There was a production of higher and smaller molecular substances in xylose–BCH MRPs with an increased reaction time, as analyzed by size exclusion chromatography. The 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging capacity and ferrous reducing activity of xylose-BCH MRPs gradually increased with the reaction time extended from 0 to 8 h.

Biochemical compositions and photosynthetic characteristics of three naturally cohabitated macroalgae, Ulva fasciata, Sargassum hemiphyllum and Grateloupia livida, were comparably explored in the field conditions in Daya Bay, northern South China Sea, as well as their responses to temperature rise. Chlorophyll a (Chl a) and carotenoids contents of U. fasciata were 1.00 ± 0.15 and 0.57 ± 0.08 mg g−1 in fresh weight (FW), being about one- and two-fold higher than that of S. hemiphyllum and G. livida; and the carbohydrate content was 20.3 ± 0.07 mg g−1 FW, being about three- and one-fold higher, respectively. Throughout the day, the maximal photochemical quantum yield (FV/FM) of Photosystem II (PS II) of these three macroalgae species decreased from morning to noon, then increased to dusk and kept steady at nighttime. Consistently, the rapid light curve-derived light utilization efficiency (α) and maximum relative electron transfer rate (rETRmax) were lower at noon than that at morning- or night-time. The FV/FM of U. fasciata (varying from 0.78 to 0.32) was 38% higher than that of G. livida throughout the day, and that of S. hemiphyllum was intermediate. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities in U. fasciata were lower than that in S. hemiphyllum and G. livida. Moreover, the rises in temperature species-specifically mediated the damage (k) caused by stressful high light and the corresponding repair (r) to photosynthetic apparatus, making the r/k ratio increase with the rising temperature in U. fasciata, unchanged in S. hemiphyllum but decreased in G. livida. Our results indicate that U. fasciata may compete with S. hemiphyllum or G. livida and dominate the macroalgae community under aggravatedly warming future in the Daya Bay.

Bovine casein peptide had a strong angiotensin-I-converting enzyme inhibitory activity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the galactose concentration on angiotensin-I-converting enzyme inhibitory activity, antioxidant activity, and physicochemical properties of Maillard reaction products derived from bovine casein peptide and galactose in aqueous model system. The browning intensities of galactose-bovine casein peptide Maillard reaction products increased remarkably with the galactose concentration increased during heat treatment, while its pH and amino groups decreased significantly. The fluorescence compounds of galactose-bovine casein peptide Maillard reaction products reached the maximum when the galactose concentration was 45 g/L. Compounds with molecular weight between 2941 and 8864 Da were dominant while compounds smaller than 250 Da were also produced during the reactions, as characterized by size exclusion chromatography. Galactose-bovine casein peptide Maillard reaction products lost 14.6% of the original angiotensin-Iconverting enzyme inhibitory activity of bovine casein peptide after the addition of galactose concentration ranged from 0 to 12%, but its strong antioxidant activities were obtained. A high galactose concentration could decrease angiotensin-I-converting enzyme inhibitory activity of bovine casein peptide and enhance its antioxidant activities.

BACKGROUNDKlebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) used to affect mainly people with compromised immunity or weakened by other infections, but recent emergence of hypervirulent strains has increased infections even in healthy individuals. These infections include liver abscess, pneumonia, bacteremia, meningitis, necrotizing fasciitis, and endophthalmitis. Although metastatic infection by hypervirulent K. pneumoniae (hvKP) is increasingly recognized, co-infection with Cryptococcus neoformans (C. neoformans) meningitis in immunocompetent hosts is rare but fatal. So, it is necessary to determine the risk factors, complications, and comorbidity of this disease.CASE SUMMARYThis report describes a 58-year-old man with hvKP pulmonary abscess, bacteremia, and meningitis, accompanied by fatal Cryptococcus meningitis. This patient presented with fever for 1 wk and drowsiness for 3 d. Laboratory findings revealed pulmonary abscess and bacteremia of K. pneumoniae. He was given intravenous antibiotic therapy, and the infection was under control for about 1 wk. However, his condition deteriorated rapidly because of metastatic purulent meningitis. Although hvKP and C. neoformans were isolated and confirmed, the patient died of spontaneous respiratory and cardiac arrest caused by cerebral hernia.CONCLUSIONHvKP has emerged as a cause of metastatic infections in immunocompetent hosts. polymicrobial co-infections should be taken into consideration when metastatic infection is present.
