A novel wide‐bandgap copolymer (PDBT‐T1) is developed and applied in organic solar cells, which yield a high efficiency of 9.74% and a high fill factor of 75%. The high photovoltaic performance is due to efficient photogenerated exciton dissociation and charge collection in PDBT‐T1‐based solar cells. The results show that PDBT‐T1 is an outstanding candidate as a wide‐bandgap material for tandem (or multi‐junction) organic solar cells.

The excellent electroluminescent (EL) properties of 1,1-disubstituted 2,3,4,5-tetraphenylsiloles, 1-methyl-1,2,3,4,5-pentaphenylsilole (MPPS), and 1,1,2,3,4,5-hexaphenylsilole (HPS) have been found. Despite some studies devoted to these materials, very little is known about the real origin of their unique EL properties. Therefore, we investigated the structures, photoluminescence (PL), and charge carrier transport properties of 1,1-disubstituted 2,3,4,5-tetraphenylsiloles as well as the effect of substituents on these characteristics. The single crystals of the three siloles involving 1,1-dimethyl-2,3,4,5-tetraphenylsilole (DMTPS), MPPS, and HPS were grown and their crystal structures were determined by X-ray diffraction. Three siloles have nonplanar molecular structures. The substituents at 1,1-positions enhance the steric hindrance and have predominant influence on the twisted degree of phenyl groups at ring carbons. This nonplanar structure reduces the intermolecular interaction and the likelihood of excimer formation, and increases PL efficiency in the solid state. The silole films show high fluorescence quantum yields (75-85%), whereas their dilute solutions exhibit a faint emission. The electronic structures of the three siloles were investigated using quantum chemical calculations. The highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs) are mainly localized on the silole ring and two phenyl groups at 2,5-positions in all cases, while the LUMOs have a significant orbital density at two exocyclic Si-C bonds. The extremely theoretical studies of luminescent properties were carried out. We calculated the nonradiative decay rate of the first excited state as well as the radiative one. It is found that the faint emission of DMTPS in solutions mainly results from the huge nonradiative decay rate. In solid states, molecular packing can remarkably restrict the intramolecular rotation of the peripheral side phenyl ring, which has a large contribution to the nonradiative transition process. This explains why the 1,1-disubstituted 2,3,4,5-tetraphenylsiloles in the thin films exhibit high fluorescence quantum yields. The charge carrier mobilities of the MPPS and HPS films were measured using a transient EL technique. We obtained a mobility of 2.1 x 10(-)(6) cm(2)/V.s in the MPPS film at an electric field of 1.2 x 10(6) V/cm. This mobility is comparable to that of Alq(3), which is one of the most extensively used electron transport materials in organic light-emitting diodes (LEDs), at the same electric field. The electron mobility of the HPS film is about approximately 1.5 times higher than that of the MPPS film. To the best of our knowledge, this kind of material is one of the most excellent emissive materials that possess both high charge carrier mobility and high PL efficiency in the solid states simultaneously. The excellent EL performances of MPPS and HPS are presumably ascribed to these characteristics.

Two different nonfullerene acceptors and one copolymer are used to fabricate ternary organic solar cells (OSCs). The two acceptors show unique interactions that reduce crystallinity and form a homogeneous mixed phase in the blend film, leading to a high efficiency of ≈10.3%, the highest performance reported for nonfullerene ternary blends. This work provides a new approach to fabricate high-performance OSCs.

Surface engineering of carbon dots and their applications in targeting sensing, accurate drug delivery and high resolution bioimaging are highlighted.

A series of wide-bandgap (WBG) copolymers with different alkyl side chains are synthesized. Among them, copolymer PBT1-EH with moderatly bulky side chains on the acceptor unit shows the best photovoltaic performance with power conversion efficiency over 10%. The results suggest that the alkyl side-chain engineering is an effective strategy to further tuning the optoelectronic properties of WBG copolymers.

Ternary structures are demonstrated as a promising approach to increase the efficiency and light harvesting of solar cells. A high power conversion efficiency of 10.2% is achieved for ternary organic solar cells with two efficient polymer donors. The improved performance is attributed to the synergistic effects of enhanced light absorption and charge transport, efficient energy transfer, improved charge generation and morphology.

Ternary bulk heterojunction (BHJ) blends have been demonstrated as a promising approach to increase the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of organic solar cells. Currently, most studies of ternary organic solar cells are based on blends of two donors and one acceptor, because of the limitation in acceptor materials. Here, we report that high-performance ternary solar cells have been fabricated with a wide-bandgap polymer donor (PDBT-T1) and two acceptor materials, phenyl-C70-butyric acid methyl ester (PC 70 BM), and nonfullerene acceptor (ITIC-Th). The addition of ITIC-Th into the BHJ blends dramatically increases the light absorption. Consequently, the champion ternary solar cell shows a high PCE of ∼10.5%, with an open-circuit voltage (V oc ) of 0.95 V, a short-circuit current (J sc ) of 15.60 mA/cm 2 , and a fill factor (FF) of 71.1%, which largely outperforms their binary counterparts. Detailed studies reveal that the ternary solar cells work in a parallel-like device model (ITIC-Th and PC 70 BM form their own independent transport network) when ITIC-Th loading is >30% in the ternary blends. The results indicate that the combination of fullerene derivative and appropriate nonfullerene acceptor in a ternary blend can be a new strategy to fabricate high-performance ternary organic solar cells.

1,6,7,12-Tetrabromoperylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid bisanhydride and the corresponding tetrabrominated perylene bisimide were first synthesized with high yields. The Suzuki coupling reaction of novel tetrabromoperylene bisimide with phenylbonoric acid was studied. The four bromines in the bay position of the perylene core were substituted successfully to yield 1,6,7,12-teraphenylperylene bisimide. The photochemical properties of the novel perylene bisimides were studied and presented.
