The acute effects of air pollution on preterm delivery were examined in a prospective cohort in Beijing, China. From early pregnancy until delivery in 1988, we followed all registered pregnant women who lived in four residential areas of Beijing. Information for both mothers and infants was collected. Daily air pollution and meteorological data were obtained independently. The sample for analysis included 25,370 resident women who gave first live births in 1988. Multiple linear regression and logistic regression were used to estimate the effects of air pollution on gestational age and preterm delivery (i.e., < 37 wk), with adjustment for outdoor temperature and humidity, day of the week, season, maternal age, gender of child, and residential area. Very high concentrations of ambient sulfur dioxide (mean = 102 micrograms/m3, maximum = 630 micrograms/m3) and total suspended particulates (mean = 375 micrograms/m3, maximum = 1 0003 micrograms/m3) were observed in these areas. There was a significant dose-dependent association between gestational age and sulfur dioxide and total suspended particulate concentrations. The estimated reduced duration of gestation was .075 wk (12.6h) and .042 wk (7.1 h) for each 100-micrograms/m3 increase in sulfur dioxide and total suspended particulates 7-d lagged moving average, respectively. The adjusted odds ratio for preterm delivery was 1.21 (95% CI = 1.01-1.46) for each in micrograms/m3 increase in sulfur dioxide, and was 1.10 (95% CI = 1.01-1.20) for each 100-micrograms/m3 increase in total suspended particulates. In addition, the gestational age distribution of high-pollution days was more skewed toward the left tail (i.e., very preterm and preterm), compared with low-pollution days. We concluded that high levels of total suspended particulates and sulfur dioxide, or of a more complex pollution mixture associated with these pollutants, appear to contribute to excess risk of preterm delivery in this population. Further work need to be carried out, with more detailed information on personal exposure and effect modifiers.

We present a detailed characterization of the Kepler-411 system (KOI 1781). This system was previously known to host two transiting planets: one with a period of 3 days (R = 2.4R ⊕ ; Kepler-411b) and one with a period of 7.8 days (R = 4.4R ⊕ ; Kepler-411c), as well as a transiting planetary candidate with a 58-day period (R = 3.3R ⊕ ; KOI 1781.03) from Kepler photometry. Here, we combine Kepler photometry data and new transit timing variation (TTV) measurements from all the Kepler quarters with previous adaptiveoptics imaging results, and dynamical simulations, in order to constrain the properties of the Kepler-411 system. From our analysis, we obtain masses of 25.6±2.6M ⊕ for Kepler-411b and 26.4±5.9 M ⊕ for Kepler-411c, and we confirm the planetary nature of KOI 1781.03 with a mass of 15.2±5.1M ⊕ , hence the name Kepler-411d. Furthermore, by assuming near-coplanarity of the system (mutual inclination below 30 • ), we discover a nontransiting planet, Kepler-411e, with a mass of 10.8±1.1M ⊕ on a 31.5-day orbit, which has a strong dynamical interaction with Kepler-411d. With densities of 1.71 ± 0.39 g cm −3 and 2.32 ± 0.83 g cm −3 , both Kepler-411c and Kepler-411d belong to the group of planets with a massive core and a significant fraction of volatiles. Although Kepler-411b has a sub-Neptune size, it belongs to the group of rocky planets.

In this paper, a novel and facile synthetic method of 3-mercaptopropionic acid functionalized copper nanoclusters with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) induced by Cu2+ (Cu2+@MPA-Cu NCs) was developed by a one-pot reaction as a fluorescent probe for the detection of sulfide ion (S2–). The prepared Cu2+@MPA-Cu NCs behaved as aggregated clusters and had strong pink fluorescence under 365 nm UV light with excellent fluorescence emission at 610 nm. The quantum yield increased from 0.56% to 4.8% before and after Cu2+ added. The presence of S2– would strongly bind to Cu2+, which caused the structure of the aggregated Cu2+@MPA-Cu NCs to be destroyed and then the fluorescence quenched. On the basis of this principle, a fluorescent probe was constructed for the detection of S2– with a very good linearity in the range 0–600 μM (R 2 = 0.9843) and a detection limit of 26.3 nM. Finally, the nanohybrids were successfully demonstrated for the application in the selective detection of S2– in food additives. This study essentially paved a new avenue for effectively developing an easy sensor platform for S2– measurements in food additives.
