In this paper, we consider the numerical solution of the time fractional diffusion equation. Essentially, the time fractional diffusion equation differs from the standard diffusion equation in the time derivative term. In the former case, the first-order time derivative is replaced by a fractional derivative, making the problem global in time. We propose a spectral method in both temporal and spatial discretizations for this equation. The convergence of the method is proven by providing a priori error estimate. Numerical tests are carried out to confirm the theoretical results. Thanks to the spectral accuracy in both space and time of the proposed method, the storage requirement due to the "global time dependence" can be considerably relaxed, and therefore calculation of the long-time solution becomes possible.
Abstract. The Cable equation has been one of the most fundamental equations for modeling neuronal dynamics. In this paper, we consider the numerical solution of the fractional Cable equation, which is a generalization of the classical Cable equation by taking into account the anomalous diffusion in the movement of the ions in neuronal system. A schema combining a finite difference approach in the time direction and a spectral method in the space direction is proposed and analyzed. The main contribution of this work is threefold: 1) We construct a finite difference/Legendre spectral schema for discretization of the fractional Cable equation. 2) We give a detailed analysis of the proposed schema by providing some stability and error estimates. Based on this analysis, the convergence of the method is rigourously established. We prove that the overall schema is unconditionally stable, and the numerical solution converges to the exact one with order O( t 2−max{α,β} + t −1 N −m ), where t, N and m are respectively the time step size, polynomial degree, and regularity in the space variable of the exact solution. α and β are two different exponents between 0 and 1 involved in the fractional derivatives. 3) Finally, some numerical experiments are carried out to support the theoretical claims.
This work is to analyze a spectral Jacobi-collocation approximation for Volterra integral equations with singular kernel ϕ(t, s) = (t − s) −μ . In an earlier work of Y. Chen and T. Tang [J. Comput. Appl. Math., 2009, 233: 938-950], the error analysis for this approach is carried out for 0 < μ < 1/2 under the assumption that the underlying solution is smooth. It is noted that there is a technical problem to extend the result to the case of Abel-type, i.e., μ = 1/2. In this work, we will not only extend the convergence analysis by Chen and Tang to the Abel-type but also establish the error estimates under a more general regularity assumption on the exact solution.
This paper proposes a parallel in time (also called time parareal) method to solve Volterra integral equations of the second kind. The parallel in time approach follows the spirit of the domain decomposition that consists of breaking the domain of computation into subdomains and solving iteratively the subproblems in a parallel way. To obtain a high order of accuracy, a spectral collocation accuracy enhancement in subdomains will be employed. Our main contributions in this work are twofold: (i) A time parareal method is designed for the integral equations, which to our knowledge is the first of its kind. The new method is an iterative process combining a coarse prediction in the whole domain with fine corrections in subdomains by using spectral approximation, leading to an algorithm of very high accuracy. (ii) A rigorous convergence analysis of the overall method is provided. The numerical experiment confirms that the overall computational cost is considerably reduced while the desired spectral rate of convergence can be obtained.
In this paper we present and analyze Chebyshev and Legendre pseudo-spectral methods for the second kind Volterra integral equations with weakly singular kernel (x − s) −μ , 0 < μ < 1. The proposed methods are based on the Gauss-type quadrature formula for approximating the integral operators involved in the equations. The present work is an extension of the earlier proposed spectral Jacobi-Galerkin method for the second kind Volterra integral equations with regular kernels (Xie et al. in J Sci Comput 53(2):414-434, [21]). A detailed convergence analysis is carried out, and several error estimates in L ∞ and L 2 ω norms are obtained. Numerical examples are considered to verify the theoretical predictions.
This work is concerned with spectral Jacobi-collocation methods for Volterra integral equations of the second kind with a weakly singular of the form (t − s) −α . When the underlying solutions are sufficiently smooth, the convergence analysis was carried out in [Chen & Tang, J. Comput. Appl. Math., 233 (2009), pp. 938-950]; due to technical reasons the results are restricted to 0 < µ < 1 2 . In this work, we will improve the results to the general case 0 < µ < 1 and demonstrate that the numerical errors decay exponentially in the infinity and weighted norms when the smooth solution is involved.Mathematics subject classification: 35Q99, 35R35, 65M12, 65M70.
