Hace poco tiempo que llegó a nuestras manos el volumen que el P. Xavier Gómez Robledo dedicó a la biografía del P. Gonzalo Carrasco, S. J. Y que lleva por subtítulo El pintor apóstol. En efecto, la biografía abarca, como es natural, sus actividades artísticas y sus ejercicios religiosos. Escrita por un hermano de la misma Compañía, es también natural que la parte correspondiente a su vida espiritual y a su apostolado tenga mayor importancia, pero hábilmente está entretejida con el desarrollo del pintor, a lo largo de su accidentada existencia.Es un libro positivamente interesante desde diversos puntos de vista y aun cuando no pretende incluir directamente la crítica de la obra, es una estimable contribución a nuestra historia del arte. Con toda honradez el autor ha recogido suficientes opiniones sobre la obra pictórica del P. Carrasco como para no exagerar sus cualidades, ni dejar en la obscuridad sus aspectos valiosos.La narración corre suavemente, amenizada con anécdotas y diálogos que le dan vivacidad y la humanizan. Pudo disponer el autor de fuentes directas, o sean los escritos mismos del P. Carrasco, que incluyen desde su Curriculum vitae, su Diario, varios Ejercicios y relaciones, así como las notas y papeles de su estancia en Nueva York. Otras fuentes fueron orales, relaciones de personas que lo trataron.Comienza la biografía en Otumba, lugar de nacimiento del P. Carrasco y la parte dedicada a "El joven pintor" termina con los años de formación en la Academia, de 1876 a 1883, periodo al que pertenecen sus primeras obras importantes: Job en el estercolero y San Luis en la peste de Roma.Una segunda parte se refiere a "El estudiante jesuita" y en ella se encuentran el noviciado, el viaje a España y la estancia en Oña. El libro empieza a cobrar más interés desde la tercera parte, "El apóstol", cuando aparece el Predicador, el Maestro, el Rector del Colegio de Puebla, el confesor de moribundos, el trabajador incansable, con el paréntesis de la enfermedad que pasó en la desaparecida Iglesia de Santa Brígida, en la Capital.En la cuarta parte, "Durante la Revolución", la vida del P. Carrasco pasó por más de un aprieto, cuando era Rector en Tepotzotlán y tuvo que habérselas directamente con varios generales y sufrir molestias, hasta que pasó a Nueva York (1914) y residió allí por cuatro años, alternando el ejercicio religioso con la actividad de pintor, principalmente retratista.No fue pacífica y sedentaria la vida del P. Carrasco. Regresó a su país en 1918 y residió en SaltilIo un año y medio. Al ser llamado a la Capital se le dio una comisión que lo llevó a Roma (1920). Nuevamente en México fue misionero en Michoacán, Puebla y Durango, hasta que fue asignado a la Iglesia de la Sagrada Familia, en la Capital, de la cual fue nombrado Superior, en 1922. Entonces puso mano a las pinturas murales del ábside; más tarde realizó otras que decoran el templo y aún tuvo fuerzas para pintar el ábside de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles. Nuevos sufri-
