Trifolium rubens L. is a leguminous plant “Preferential Attention”, according to the Catalog of Protected Flora of Castile and Leon (Spain). In this study we aimed to analyze the potential of three bacterial strains of the genus Rhizobium to improve the growth and development of this plant. All three strains produced 3-indoleacetic acid (IAA), but the strain ATCC 14480 produced the most. In addition, all strains produced biofilms and cellulases, although in different quantities. The synthesis of these products has been described as being related to the processes of the adherence of bacteria to the plant root surface and their entrance into the plant, respectively. In addition, in vitro assays and assays conducted under controlled and sterile conditions were performed, showing that the three strains were capable of nodulating T. rubens L. and effectively fixed nitrogen for the plant. These results were corroborated by morphological and histological analysis of nodules. Finally, greenhouse assays determined the effects of the strains under more competitive conditions, and it was concluded that inoculated plants presented greater lengths and weights, both aerial and radicular, and also chlorophyll and nitrogen content compared to the uninoculated controls.
One of the most important aspects in university degrees of scientific scope is the implementation in the laboratory of the knowledge acquired in the theoretical classes. In this sense, the Faculty of Pharmacy in the University of Salamanca has developed an internal project for volunteer students of the Degree in Pharmacy in order to attend practical sessions in laboratories which belong to different research groups linked to the degree. The main objective was an approach to research in Microbiology, consolidating theoretical concepts and highlighting the importance and key aspects when working in a laboratory. Every year, participants attend the three-hour practices where they observed and visualized different protocols and techniques, as well as the daily functioning of a research laboratory. According to the participants’ perceptions, the experience has been totally satisfactory. The students appreciate the possibility of applying the theoretical concepts learned in the lectures of their degree in real research. In addition, students value contact with young predoctoral researchers in order to clarify certain doubts about the scientific career. One of the strengths of the program is the reduction of the number of participants with respect to the theoretical classes of the degree. Forming smaller groups allows for the students to receive more individual assessment of comprehension problems. Smaller groups also facilitate smoother dialogue between students and teachers.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
