Globally, Smallholder farming systems (SFS) are recognized as one of the most important pillars of rural economic development and poverty alleviation because of their contribution to food security. However, support for this agricultural sector is hampered by lack of reliable information on the distributions and acreage of smallholder fields. This information is essential in not only monitoring food security and informing markets but also in guiding the determination of levels of support required from government by individual farmers. There is urgent need for robust techniques that can be used to cost-effectively and time-efficiently map smallholder crop fields especially in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. This study attempts to do this by using an approach in which optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data are systematically combined and classified using Extreme Gradient Boosting (Xgboost). We also investigated model stacking as another technique to improve classification accuracy. We combined Xgboost with Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), and Naïve Bayes (NB). The combined use of multi-temporal Sentinel-2 bands, spectral indices, and Sentinel-1 produced better results than exclusive use of optical data (α = 0.95, p = 0.0005). Furthermore, stacking of classification algorithms based on model comparisons achieved higher accuracy than stacking the algorithms indiscriminately (α = 0.95, p = 0.0100). Through systematic fusion of SAR and optical data and hyper-parameter tuning of Xgboost, we achieved a maximum classification accuracy of 97.71%, while achieving a maximum accuracy of 96.06% through model stacking. This highlights the importance of multi-sensor data fusion and multi-classifier systems when mapping fragmented agricultural landscapes.

Wheat is an important staple crop in the global food chain. The production of wheat in many regions is constrained by the lack of use of advanced technologies for wheat monitoring. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is an important platform in remote sensing for providing near real-time farm-scale information. This information aids in making recommendations for monitoring and improving crop management to ensure food security. This study appraised global scientific research trends on wheat and UAV studies between 2005 and 2021, using a bibliometric method. The 398 published documents were mined from Web of Science, Scopus, and Dimensions. Results showed that an annual growth rate of 23.94% indicates an increase of global research based on wheat and UAVs for the surveyed period. The results revealed that China and USA were ranked as the top most productive countries, and thus their dominance in UAVs extensive usage and research developments for wheat monitoring during the study period. Additionally, results showed a low countries research collaboration prevalent trend, with only China and Australia managing multiple country publications. Thus, most of the wheat- and UAV-related studies were based on intra-country publications. Moreover, the results showed top publishing journals, top cited documents, Zipf’s law authors keywords co-occurrence network, thematic evolution, and spatial distribution map with the lack of research outputs from Southern Hemisphere. The findings of also show that “UAV” is fundamental in all keywords with the largest significant appearance in the field. This connotes that UAV efficiency was important for most studies that were monitoring wheat and provided vital information on spatiotemporal changes and variability for crop management. Findings from this study may be useful in policy-making decisions related to the adoption and subsidizing of UAV operations for different crop management strategies designed to enhance crop yield and the direction of future studies.

Weather extremes pose substantial threats to food security in areas where the main source of livelihood is rain-fed crop production. In most of these areas, agricultural index insurance (AII) is recognized as being capable of securitizing food production by providing safety nets against weather-induced crop losses. Unfortunately, however, AII does not indemnify farmers for non-weather-related crop losses. This study investigates how this gap can be filled by exploring strategies through which AII can be linked with non-weather factors that influence crop production. We do this by using an improvised variable ranking methodology to identify these factors in the O.R. Tambo District Municipality, South Africa. Results show that key agrometeorological variables comprising surface moisture content, growing degree-days, and precipitation influence maize yield even under optimal weather conditions, while seed variety, fertilizer application rate, soil pH, and ownership of machinery play an equally important role. This finding is important because it demonstrates that although AII focuses more on weather elements, there are non-weather variables that may expose farmers to production risk even under optimal weather conditions. As such, linking AII with critical non-weather, yield-determining factors can be a better risk management strategy.
