Soro de 200 suínos abatidos em frigorífico, oriundos de rebanhos intensivos, híbridos, em idade de terminação, da região noroeste do RS, Brasil, foram coletados e testados para imunoglobulinas antitoxoplásmicas através da Hemaglutinação Indireta (HAI). Ao mesmo tempo, fez-se a relação entre soro positivos e a formação de lesões de retinocoroidite através de cortes histológicos em globos oculares, usando a coloração de Hematoxilina-Eosina (HE). A prevalência da infecção toxoplásmica, considerando títulos positivos a partir de 1:64, foi de 18%. Os títulos ficaram entre 1:64 (39%); 1:128 (5,5%); 1:256 (39%); 1:512 (5,5%) e 1:1024 (11 %). Alterações histopatológicas encontradas em 3 amostras positivas foram: atrofia da retina (1:64 e 1:256) e hiperemia da mácula (1:256). Pelos resultados obtidos, não foi possível estabelecer uma relação entre retinocoroidite e sorologia positiva nestes animais estudados.
Os autores estudaram o efeito protoescolecida, in vitro e in vivo, de solução salina de cloreto de sódio à concentração de 5,10 e 20%, pela imersão por 24 horas, de fígado e pulmões de ovinos parasitados por cisto hidático. Pelo estudo in vitro os protoescóleces permaneceram viáveis num total de 66,68%, 43,10% e 43,30% quando tratados nas concentrações de 5, 10 e 20%, respectivamente. Pela alimentação de 6 (seis) cães com vísceras assim tratadas, foram encontrados, após a necropsia, 4 (quatro) cães parasitados por Echinococcus. Não houve intolerância nem lesões anátomo-patológicas devido a administração diária de cloreto de sódio nestas concentrações. O tratamento de vísceras por imersão em cloreto de sódio nas concentrações e no tempo descritos não serve como método profilático da equinococose, com vistas a sua utilização na alimentação de cães.
