The viscosities of samples of poly(methy1 methacrylate), PMMA, W' tJ narrow molecular weight distributions and with molecular weights in the range 1,75 . lo4 < M , < 1,60. lo6 were measured in methyl methacrylate, MMA, as solvent at 20,40, and 60 "C in the dilute and in the semi-dilute concentration regime. By extrapolation to zero polymer concentration the limiting viscosity numbers and therefrom the Mark-Houwink-Kuhn-Sakurada parameters for PMMA in MMA were obtained. In addition, unperturbed dimensions were determined from dilute solution viscosity data. Together with some published results for more concentrated solutions of PMMA in MMA the viscosities of the semi-dilute systems were analysed in terms of scaling theories. It was found that irrespective of temperature, polymer concentration, and molecular weight all data could be quite well fitted by a single master curve when the relative viscosity q/qo was plotted as a function of the product of the intrinsic viscosity and mass concentration [q] . c.No sharp transitions between different concentration regimes were observed, however, and the scaling law exponents for the entangled solution are significantly higher than predicted by theory. 0025-1 16)87/$03.00 *) Note that Eq. Kinetische Untersuchungen der radikalischenPolymer isat ion von But ylacr ylat Winfried Wunderlieh Herrn Prof. Dr. G. V. Schulz zum 70. Geburtstag gewidmet (Eingangsdatum: 25. SUMMARY:The polymerization of butyl acrylate was investigated in benzene and in butyl propionate at 30, 50, and 70°C as a function of the concentration of initiator and monomer. The rate of polymerization and the molecular weight distribution of the formed polymers were measured at conversions less than 3%. The results d o not meet the ideal kinetic model of radical polymerization. An examination of possible additional influences on the results suggests the conclusion that primary radical termination and reactions of chain transfer radicals are the main reasons for the deviation from the conventional model. The relative rates of these reactions, as compared with those of chain propagation and normal termination, can be calculated, and in some cases only be estimated from the experimental results. SUMMARY:Measurements of viscosity and light scattering are made on the two stereoregular forms of polymethylmethacrylate, in order to determine coil dimensions and differences in thermodynamic behaviour. The isotactic form has the greater persistence length in all solvents investigated. The theta-temperatures of the two isomers are different, with the relative positions of the two theta-points depending on the solvent. The second osmotic v t i a l coefficients show "normal" behaviour in butyl chloride. I n the mixed solvent butanone-isopropanol, extreme differences appear between the isotactic and the syndiotactic forms.
The shape of the scattering curve of Polymethylrnethacrylate (PMMA) in solution is a function of the tacticity. The influence of a periodicity is apparent in the scattering curve of syndiotactic PMMA. A quantitative interpretation is possible by superimposition of a helical scattering curve on that due to a coil. Here one assumes H = 21 A, R = 4 A and a = 13 A (H and R are the identity period and the radius of thc helix, respectively, and a is the persistence length of the coil). The scattering curve of the isotactic PMMA shows nearly the course expected for coils according to K r a t k y et al. [2-51. However a lower intensity is observed, which can be interpreted using plausible assumptions. The persistence length is also found to be a = 13 A.The influence of the finite cross section of the tread on the scattering curve depends on the electrondensity distribution within this cross section and on the electron density of the solvent. In the case of PMMA in benzene, the cross-section function can be set equal to unity for scattering angles up to 2 8 = 10".
