Introdução: A dependência química é uma questão de saúde pública que afeta o usuário de substâncias psicoativas, seus familiares e a sociedade, a enfermagem tem um papel no enfrentamento dessa problemática, pois consegue detectar fatores associados ao consumo realizando atividades assistenciais para prevenção, tratamento e redução dos danos. Objetivo: Analisar os estudos bibliográficos sobre a formação de enfermagem para as práticas profissionais voltadas aos dependentes químicos. Método: Revisão bibliográfica de caráter qualitativo nas bases de dados: LILACS, BDENF, SCIELO e BVS. Somente 24 artigos correspondem aos objetivos da temática. Os critérios de inclusão foram: publicações entre 2012 a 2018, que abordassem o preparo dos profissionais de enfermagem sobre o uso de substâncias psicoativas; o papel do enfermeiro no processo de mudança social do dependente químico; a importância da inserção de disciplinas direcionadas a atuação de enfermagem com dependência química; prevenção e a reabilitação dos usuários de substâncias psicoativas. Os critérios de exclusão foram: artigos com profissionais de outros setores da saúde; em língua estrangeira e que não enfatizasse a temática pesquisada. Resultados: Constatou-se que acadêmicos de enfermagem não se sentem preparados para atuar com dependência química, tendo dificuldades em fazer uma intervenção correta com o paciente; apresentando preconceitos e falta de conhecimentos teóricos/práticos, proveniente da formação acadêmica deficiente. Conclusão: A inserção do tema dependência química na graduação de enfermagem é fundamental para novos paradigmas. Portanto, o profissional de enfermagem que presta assistência aos usuários e familiares, precisa ser preparado durante sua formação acadêmica para o atendimento com essa demanda especifica.
