As teses de Walter Benjamin sobre o conceito de história são, a nosso ver, provocadoras para os estudiosos que se detêm ao passado. Elas estimulam o questionamento acerca dos bens culturais de outrora, tornados fontes documentais nas pesquisas histórico-geográficas, e provocam-nos a elaborar uma outra forma de tratar e evidenciar esse passado e a sociedade que o caracterizava, bem como o espaço nela produzido. Com base nisso, objetivamos problematizar as fontes documentais – especialmente os textos da Imprensa Oficial – que na Primeira República foram espetacularizadas e instrumentalizadas no processo de expansão e reprodução capitalistas na e da Parahyba do Norte. A discussão é feita a partir de uma série documental, qual seja o jornal A União, que constituía a imprensa oficial na Parahyba do Norte no período republicano. Ao final do texto, propomos um debate de método que busque dessacralizar as fontes documentais, “relíquias inanimadas dos mortos” segundo Hobsbawn, para enfim elaborarmos outras perspectivas histórico-geográficas, que ressalte o ponto de vista dos subalternizados e que seja ativa e transformadora, como propôs Benjamin.
Este artigo propõe um conjunto de fontes históricas que ajudam a identificar e desvendar práticas financeirizadas na produção das cidades nas primeiras décadas dos novecentos, incluindo cidades periféricas como a Parahyba. Essas práticas se basearam em instrumentos jurídicos e financeiros criados naquele momento histórico, voltados ao mercado de crédito e que envolviam, entre outros bens, a propriedade imobiliária. Os referidos instrumentos – letras hipotecárias, títulos de empréstimo ou de ações, entre outros – se desdobravam de escrituras públicas registradas nos livros notariais dos cartórios e eram estampados em anúncios e notícias dos jornais da época. Aqui, são tratados não apenas pelas informações e dados empíricos que nos fornecem, mas também como instrumentos do processo de mobilização da cidade como mercadoria.
Os mapas publicados pela Sociedade Nacional de Agricultura (SNA), premiados na Exposição Nacional de 1908, divulgaram o território brasileiro como “objeto portátil” e vendável para as economias dos centros capitalistas no alvorar do século XX. Eles constituíam um imenso “catálogo de vendas” com informações acerca do território nacional e das unidades federativas. O objetivo deste artigo é discutir sobre como os ditos mapas serviram a um projeto de “venda” do território. Sabemos que essas representações cartográficas exibidas na Exposição de 1908 intermediaram o conhecimento e domínio dos territórios por parte das economias imperialistas. Os produtores daqueles mapas, diziam expor a “geografia econômica do país” para contribuir com o seu “desenvolvimento”. A agenda secreta existente nessa cartografia fazia do território uma mercadoria como as demais ao ocultar o trabalho expropriado. Os mapas da SNA também revelam como o território era concebido no passado e, simultaneamente, desvendam o território herdado e presente.
