This paper tested the hypothesis that the structural components of vegetation have impact over the distribution of owl species in a fragment of a semi-deciduous seasonal forest. This paper also determined which vegetation variables contributed to the spatial distribution of owl species. It was developed in the Perobas Biological Reserve (PBR) between September and December 2011. To conduct the owl census, a playback technique was applied at hearing points distributed to cover different vegetation types in the study area. A total of 56 individual owls of six species were recorded: Tropical Screech-Owl (Megascops choliba), Black-capped Screech-Owl (Megascops atricapilla), Tawnybrowed Owl (Pulsatrix koeniswaldiana), Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium brasilianum), Mottled Owl (Strix virgata) and Stygian Owl (Asio stygius). The results suggest that the variables of vegetation structure have impact on the occurrence of owls. The canopy height, the presence of hollow trees, fallen trees and glades are the most important structural components influencing owl distribution in the sampled area. Keywords: vegetation structure, seasonal semi-deciduous forest, Perobas Biological Reserve, Strigiform.
In recent decades, the northwest of the state of Paraná, Brazil, has undergone a dramatic suppression and fragmentation of its primary vegetation, currently there remains small and sparse forest fragments. MENQ, W. Observações comportamentais do gavião-pato Spizaetus melanoleucus (Accipitriformes, Accipitridae) no estado do Paraná, Brasil. Arq. Ciênc. Vet. Zool. UNIPAR, Umuarama, v. 18, n. 3, p. 175-178, jul./set. BEHAVIORAL OBSERVATIONS ON THE BLACK-AND-WHITE HAWK-EAGLE Spizaetus melanoleucus (Accipitriformes, Accipitridae) IN THE STATE OF PARANÁ, BRAZILABSTRACT: The black-and-white hawk-eagle (Spizaetus melanoleucus) is a forest raptor and naturally rare throughout its distribution. In the state of Paraná, it has few records, especially in the northwest. Due to low population densities and inconspicuous behavior, there is little biological information available on the species. This study presents some records and behavioral observations on Spizaetus melanoleucus in two forest remnants in the countryside of the state of Paraná. Observations suggest that the species may often forage in open areas, seeking small mammals and other vertebrates. Moreover, the species seems to be more detectable in the late-morning and early afternoon flights. Information on the biology, behavior, hunting strategies and distribution of the species can help to better understand their biology and assist on conservation strategies. The genus Leptodon encompasses two Neotropical raptor species. The more widely-distributed Gray-headed Kite (Leptodon cayanensis) occurs in a vast area of Neotropical region, while the White-collared Kite (Leptodon forbesi) is endemic of the Atlantic Forest of northeastern Brazil, but there are some questions about the extent of its geographic distribution and about its sympatry with its congener. Here we present a review of the geographic distribution and the diagnoses of L. forbesi, correcting recent records based on misidentifications. We also clarify the main features of juvenile and subadult plumage of Leptodon raptors and describe new phases of juvenile plumage.
The Peregrine Falco peregrinus, is an Nearctic migrant to Brazil where its status in central Brazil is still poorly known. Herein we present a compilation of records of the species from the state of Tocantins and comment on its use of a wintering site in the state of Goiás. These records show that the Tocantins-Araguaia River Basin is a migration route for the species, and therefore a mid-continental migration route through the interior of South America.
