Background: Risky sexual behaviors are associated with the number of sexual partners, and non-use of condom, among other factors. Objective: To identify the profile of health students attending a higher education institution, according to demographic and sexual characteristics. Methods: This is a prospective, cross-sectional and descriptive study with a quantitative approach using a sample of 819 university health students. We used a questionnaire in order to obtain information on the students' demographic characteristics, sexual behaviors and knowledge of STIs/AIDS. We defined risky behavior as the adoption of 2 or more of the following sexual behaviors: non-use of condom, more than 10 sexual partners, sexual intercourse under the influence of alcohol/drugs, and sexual intercourse with little or recently known person. Results: The sample was composed of 77.41% (634) of women and 22.59% (185) of men, with a mean age of 24.4 years (SD ± 6.7). Most participants (52%) reported risky behaviors and insufficient knowledge of STIs. Conclusion: The fact that 52% of the participants reported risky sexual behaviors points to the need for preventive interventions among this population, aimed at raising awareness and reducing the risk of STIs.

Metformin was not effective in reducing BMI and preventing GDM in obese pregnant women.

Objective: To evaluate whether there is an association between altered maternal lipid profile and the lipid profile of the newborn in a maternity hospital. Subjects and method: Cross-sectional study with 435 parturients and their respective newborns. Blood samples from the newborns were collected during delivery by venipuncture of the umbilical cord close to the placenta. Blood samples from the parturients were collected in the pre-delivery room or right after delivery. The concentrations of total cholesterol, triglycerides and HDL-c were determined by an enzymatic colorimetric method and LDL-c was calculated by the Friedewald formula. Results: There was no significant difference in mean concentrations of total cholesterol, LDL-c, HDL-c and triglycerides in neonates according to altered or non-altered maternal total cholesterol, LDL-c, HDL-c and triglycerides. Conclusions: Change in maternal lipid profile is not significantly associated with the mean concentrations of total cholesterol, LDL-c, HDL-c and triglycerides in newborns. Objective: To evaluate the use of metformin for preventing cesarean deliveries and large-forgestational-age (LGA) newborn (NB) outcomes in non-diabetic obese pregnant women. Subjects and methods: This is a randomized clinical trial with obese pregnant women, divided into 2 groups: metformin group and control group, with followed-up prenatal routine. The gestational age of participants was less than or equal to 20 weeks and were monitored throughout entire prenatal period. For outcomes of delivery and LGA newborns, absolute risk reduction (ARR) and the number needed to treat (NNT) were calculated with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: 357 pregnant women were evaluated. From the metformin group (n = 171), 68 (39.8%) subjects underwent cesarean delivery, and 117 (62.9%) subjects from the control group (n = 186) had intercurrence (p < 0.01). As for the mothers' general characteristics, there was significance for marital status (p < 0.01). Maternalfetal results presented reduced preeclampsia (p < 0,01). Primary prophylactic results presented an ARR of 23.1 times (95% CI: 13.0-33.4) with NNT of 4 (95% CI: 3.0-7.7) and no significant values for LGA NB (p > 0.01). Secondary prophylactic outcomes presented decreased odds ratio for preeclampsia (OR = 0.17, 95% CI: 0.10-0.41). Conclusion: The use of metformin reduced cesarean section rates, resulted in a small number of patients to be treated, but it did not reduce LGA NB. Administering a lower dosage of metformin from the early stages to the end of treatment may yield significant results with fewer side effects.

Objetivo: realizar o levantamento do perfil epidemiológico dos pacientes com HIV/AIDS do estado do Paraná. Método: trata-se de um estudo ecológico que utilizou como unidade de análise os 399 municípios do Estado do Paraná nos quais são operacionalizados pelas ações do Programa Estadual de Controle da DST/AIDS e Hepatites Virais, analisando o perfil epidemiológico do Sistema Nacional de Vigilância em Saúde 2011. Resultados: o primeiro caso de AIDS registrado no Paraná foi em 1984, até junho de 2010, foram registrados 28.376 casos. As cinco cidades com maior número de casos foram: Curitiba (10.549), Londrina (2.166), Foz do Iguaçu (1.348), Maringá (1.124) e Paranaguá (1.113). Conclusão: observa-se que o quadro epidemiológico de HIV/AIDS no Brasil ainda é um problema com poucas expectativas de solução. Destaca-se também que o perfil de infectados vem se modificando ao longo dos anos.

RESUMOO objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar o perfil e a qualidade de vida dos docentes Enfermeiros de Universidades Privadas e Pública de Curitiba -PR. Estudo exploratóriodescritivo com abordagem quantitativa do tipo transversal, desenvolvido com 44 docentes de nove instituições de ensino superior. Para a coleta dos dados, utilizou-se um questionário contendo variáveis sociodemográficas e um instrumento de avaliação de qualidade de vida (Whoqol--bref abreviado), contendo 26 perguntas estruturadas, avaliando diversas facetas, duas das quais sobre a qualidade de vida geral e 24 acerca dos quatro domínios: físico, psicológico, relações sociais e meio ambiente. Os dados foram coletados por meio do google docs, e analisados pelo programa Microsoft Excell, aplicou-se o Teste Wilcoxon e Teste de Correlação de Pearson para avaliação dos escores de qualidade de vida entre os docentes. Participaram 18 docentes de Instituição Pública e 26 de privadas, predominando o gênero feminino com 84,1%, A maior média em relação aos domínios são as relações sociais com 73,48±17,63 e o menor score o domínio físico com 59,17±9,38. Conclui-se que não existem diferenças significativas entre a QV dos Docentes Enfermeiros das IES Públicas e Privadas. This is an exploratory, descriptive, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, developed with 44 teachers from nine higher education institutions. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire containing sociodemographic variables and a quality of life assessment tool (abbreviated WHOQOL-BREF) containing 26 structured questions. These assessed various aspects, with two items on the overall quality of life and 24 about the four domains: physical, psychological, social relationships, and environment. Data were collected using Google Docs and analyzed using Microsoft Excel. We applied the Wilcoxon test and Pearson's correlation test to evaluate the quality of life scores among the teachers. Participants included 18 teachers from public institutions and 26 from private ones, and were predominantly females, at 84.1%. The highest mean in relation to the domains is for social relations, with 73.48 ± 17.63, and the lowest for the physical, with 59.17 ± 9.38. It is concluded that there are no significant differences between the QOL of nursing teachers in the public and private higher education institutions.
