Paper spray ionization has been developed as a direct, fast and low-cost sampling and ionization method for qualitative and quantitative mass spectrometric (MS) analysis of complex mixtures. Analyte ions are generated by applying a high voltage and a small volume (~10 μL) of spray solvent onto a porous substrate. The sample can be preloaded onto the paper or mixed into the spray solution. The geometry of the paper and the method of supplying the necessary internal standard are important factors that affect the ionization efficiency and subsequently the sensitivity and quantitation accuracy of the analytical data. As the cut angle of the paper tip is changed, the spray plume, the total spray current and the electric field intensity at the tip all vary correspondingly, with resulting differences in signal intensity. Sample load is another important factor for obtaining a stable MS signal and accurate quantitative results. The optimal sample load was found to be dependent on the paper size. The dissolution and spray process was also investigated and analyte transfer on paper was shown to be largely associated with bulk solution flow towards the spray tip. The information gathered from these systematic studies provides guidance for the design and optimization of a disposable sample cartridge for paper spray MS, a device which potentially is suitable for fast clinical analysis, especially for point-of-care diagnostics.

This paper presents a fully wireless cardiac pressure sensing system. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved medical stents are explored as radiating structures to support simultaneous transcutaneous wireless telemetry and powering. An application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), designed and fabricated using the Texas Instruments 130-nm CMOS process, enables wireless telemetry, remote powering, voltage regulation, and processing of pressure measurements from a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) capacitive sensor. This paper demonstrates fully wireless-pressure-sensing functionality with an external 35-dB.m RF powering source across a distance of 10 cm. Measurements in a regulated pressure chamber demonstrate the ability of the cardiac system to achieve pressure resolutions of 0.5 mmHg over a range of 0-50 mmHg using a channel data-rate of 42.2 kb/s.

This paper presents the modeling, design, fabrication, and measurement of microelectromechanical systemsenabled continuously tunable evanescent-mode electromagnetic cavity resonators and filters with very high unloaded quality factors (Q u ). Integrated electrostatically actuated thin diaphragms are used, for the first time, for tuning the frequency of the resonators/filters. An example tunable resonator with 2.6 : 1 (5.0-1.9 GHz) tuning ratio and Q u of 300-650 is presented. A continuously tunable two-pole filter from 3.04 to 4.71 GHz with 0.7% bandwidth and insertion loss of 3.55-2.38 dB is also shown as a technology demonstrator. Mechanical stability measurements show that the tunable resonators/filters exhibit very low frequency drift (less than 0.5% for 3 h) under constant bias voltage. The mass-selective manipulation of ions at elevated pressure, including mass analysis, ion isolation, or excitation, is of great interest for the development of mass spectrometry instrumentation, particularly for systems in which ion traps are employed as mass analyzers or storage devices. While experimental exploration of high-pressure mass analysis is limited by various difficulties, such as ion detection or electrical discharge at high-pressure, theoretical methods have been developed in this work to study ion/neutral collision effects within quadrupole ion traps and to explore their performance at pressures up to 1 Torr. Ion trapping, isolation, excitation, and resonance ejection were investigated over a wide pressure range. The theoretically calculated data were compared with available experimental data for pressures up to 50 mTorr, allowing the prediction of ion trap performance at pressures more than 10 times higher.
