Combined digital data from multiple satellites and Doppler radar can provide fire weather meteorologists and resource managers with accurate information on forest fire location, intensity, growth, smoke plumes, and associated mesoscale weather. An integrated application using real-time satellite and radar is described for the Miller's Reach forest fire that occurred in south-central Alaska in June 1996. Generated data and products were made available immediately on-scene via point-to-point high-speed portable satellite communications. This fire consumed over 15 000 ha and destroyed 344 structures.
Today, many principals are assigned to struggling schools with the mandate to quickly change the academic trajectory of the students. Interviews were conducted to gain an understanding of how principals and core teachers working at rural middle schools under chronic academic stress perceived the increased academic expectations at their schools. Three key findings were revealed: (a) There were misaligned principal and teacher interpretations of efforts to improve the school; (b) there tended to be an ongoing focus on what was wrong with the school; and (c) principals felt they were alone in the process. A discussion of these findings is provided.
Most educational leadership preparation programs include classes designed to provide a broad survey of legal issues in the profession. Soon after these future leaders complete course requirements, their knowledge base can be outdated. We discuss, through relevant research along with theoretical and actual case studies, contemporary legal issues confronted by educational leaders and the need for the inclusion of social justice in leadership programs and ongoing professional development and training. We offer suggestions and strategies for professional development and training designed to keep educational leaders current with legal issues and to enable appropriate decision making to minimize the possibility of legal action.
