O artigo pretende discutir as representações de gênero das petições enviadas às secretarias de Estado dos Negócios do Reino e do Império. A documentação foi coligida na Coleção de Documentos Biográficos da Divisão de Manuscritos da Biblioteca Nacional do Rio de Janeiro, separando-se para análise somente as petições que continham referências a estabelecimentos femininos de reclusão fundados na referida cidade. Nas petições que dirigiam ao monarca por intermédio das secretarias, os requerentes utilizavam representações tradicionais do feminino e do masculino, reforçando-as ou as invertendo, conforme a estratégia discursiva adotada, com a finalidade de obter determinadas mercês régias. As imagens de gênero analisadas não se referiam apenas às relações domésticas dos casais, aludindo também às concepções mais amplas do poder que envolviam os súditos e o soberano.
O artigo pretende examinar a experiência religiosa da beata Jacinta de São José, focalizando três aspectos principais: as relações que manteve com diversos membros de ordens religiosas estabelecidas no Rio de Janeiro; os antecedentes familiares; e as relações entre os escritos de vida de Jacinta e a literatura mística do século XVI.
