Single crystals of a new ternary compound, SmPd(2)Ga(2), have been synthesized by flux growth methods. This compound adopts a tetragonal space group I4/mmm, Z = 2, with lattice parameters a = 4.2170(3) A and c = 10.4140(3) A. The crystal structure is composed of layers of isolated Sm atoms and layers of PdGa(4) edge-sharing tetrahedra alternating along the c-axis. The sample is metallic (d rho/dT > 0) with a weak temperature dependence above 100 K. This new material has physical properties similar to those of other Sm intermetallics and has, most notably, a large positive magnetoresistance at low temperatures. Magnetic measurements indicate that SmPd(2)Ga(2) is ferromagnetic with T(c) approximately 5 K.
Single crystals of Y4PtGa12 have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in the cubic Im3m space group with lattice parameters a = 8.530(5) Å. Magnetic property measurements show that Y4PtGa12 does not order magnetically. Structure-property relationships with the isostructural antiferromagnet Tb4PtGa12 are discussed.
Single crystals of TbRhIn5 were synthesized using the flux growth method. TbRhIn5 adopts the HoCoGa5 structure type and crystallizes in the space group P4/mmm, Z = 1. Lattice parameters are a = 4.6000(6) A, c = 7.4370(11) A, and V = 157.29(6) A3. Transport measurements show that TbRhIn5 is metallic (drho/dT > 0). A sharp antiferromagnetic transition is observed at T(N) = 48 K in the susceptibility data for TbRhIn5, which is highly anisotropic when the field is oriented along the c axis and a-b plane of the crystal and has an average effective moment of 9.72 muB/Tb3+.
Rhodium I 7900Crystal Growth, Structure, Magnetic, and Transport Properties of TbRhIn 5 . -Single crystals of the title compound are obtained from the elements at 1373 K (Tb:Rh:In = 1:1:20, 2 h). The compound crystallizes in the tetragonal space group P4/mmm with Z = 1 (HoCoGa5-type structure). TbRhIn5 exhibits metallic conductivity. A sharp antiferromagnetic transition is observed at TN = 48 K in the susceptibility data of TbRhIn 5 , which is highly anisotropic when the field is oriented along the c axis and a-b plane of the crystal and has an average effective moment of 9.72 µB/Tb 3+ . -(WILLIAMS, W. Synthesis, Structure, and Magnetoresistance of SmPd 2 Ga 2 . -Single crystals of the title compound are prepared by flux growth methods from mixtures of Sm, Pd, and Ga in a molar ratio of 1:1:20 (1170°C, 7 h). SmPd2Ga2 crystallizes in the tetragonal space group I4/mmm with Z = 2. The crystal structure is composed of layers of isolated Sm atoms and layers of edge-sharing PdGa4 tetrahedra alternating along the c-axis. The compound is metallic and orders ferromagnetically at 5 K. It has unusually large positive magnetoresistance at low temperatures and exhibits no superconductivity down to 1.8 K. -(WILLIAMS, W.
