Aus Anlaß der Darstellung von Tryptophan aus Edestin gewannen wir eine in Stäbchen krystallisierende Substanz, die sich nach ihren ganzen Eigenschaften und ihrer Zusammensetzung als Urokaninsäure erwies. Die erste Wiederholung des Versuches, der erwähnten Verbindung bei tryptischer Verdauung von Edestin habhaft zu werden, ergab ein negatives Resultat. Bei einem dritten Versuch gelang es hingegen wiederum, Urokaninsäure zu erhalten. 1 ) Es ergibt sich die Frage, wie das Auftreten der genannten Verbindung aufzufassen ist. Bekanntlich steht sie in unmittelbarer Beziehung zum Histidin, ist sie doch ih^ßr Konstitution nach /9-Imidazolylacrylsäure. Es ist naheliegend, an eine sekundäre Bildung von Urokaninsäure aus der genannten Aminosäure zu denken, und zwar kommen in erster Linie bakterielle Einwirkungen in Frage. Hierzu sei bemerkt, daß der Versuch, Urokaninsäure aus Edestin, das in üblicher Weise durch Kochen mit 25°/ 0 iger Schwefelsäure hydrolysiert worden war, zu gewinnen, ein negatives Ergebnis hatte. Bei der Anstellung der Verdauungsversuche wurde alles getan, um eine bakterielle Infektion zu vermeiden. Bei dem zuletzt angestellten Versuche wurden sterile Gefäße angewandt.
