Stoner wird eine Theorie entwiekelt, wonach man die maximale Dichte eines Sternes aus seiner Masse bereehnen kann*.Stoners Gedankengang is~ folgender. Beim absoluten Nullpunkt ist die mittlere kinetische Energie eineswon die Zahl der Elektronen im Kubikzentimenter bedeutet, m die Masse des Elektrons und h die Plancksche Konstante. Dieser Ausdruck unterseheidet sich durch den Faktor 22/3 von demienigen Fermis, der ftir ein einatomiges Gas aufgestellt worden ist. St oner glaubt diese Abi~nderung wegen der magnetischen Eigenschaften der freien Elektronen treffeu zu miissen. Das mittlere Molekulargewicht der Sternmaterie glaubt S t o n e r glelch 2,5 m~ setzen zu kSnnen, wom H die Masse eines Wasserstoffatoms bedeutet. Ist M die Masse eines Sternes und r sein Radius, so gilt die Beziehung 4 3 M ~ -~r (2,5mHn). (2) Die Zahl der Molekiile kann, nach Stoner, ungefahr gleich der Zahl der freien Elektronen angenommen werden.
