Este artículo aborda la doble conciencia presente en la estructura y el contenido del cuento “Children of the sea”. La doble conciencia revela las distintas subjetividades que componen la escritura de la autora en tanto afrodescendiente, migrante y mujer. El análisis se sustenta tanto en una revisión de la crítica literaria feminista y caribeña sobre la utilización de la oralidad como en una exploración histórica que vincula la migración forzada de personas africanas con aquella provocada por la violencia política. Se incluyen, además, recursos teóricos que explican la doble identidad. Se concluye que la fragmentación en dos voces crea una tercera narrativa que integra aspectos femeninos, afrodescendientes y haitianos que han sido invisibilizados por la cultura occidental.
