The dispersal potential of nymphal stinkbug, Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas, 1851) (Het., Pentatomidae) preying on larvae of the tomato leafminer Tuta absoluta (Meyrick, 1917) (Lep., Gelechiidae) was studied in an open‐sided greenhouse. The parameters investigated were (1) the density of nymphs released per plant (one or five); (2) the release time (0600 and 1800 h); and (3) predator satiation level (satiated and 24‐h‐starved nymphs). Tomato plants were infested with larvae of the tomato leafminer (one third or fourth instar per leaf). The evaluations started 30 min after the release of predators second instar and hourly evaluations were carried out over 36 and 24 h for release times of 0600 and 1800 h, respectively. Starved nymphs released in the morning, either alone or in groups of five, dispersed faster than satiated nymphs. All of the starved individuals had left the plant by the end of the observation period, whereas 25 and 36% of the satiated nymphs released alone and in groups, respectively, stayed on the plant until the end of the observation period. Both satiated and starved nymphs showed slower rates of dispersal when released at 1800 h. Satiated nymphs delayed prey attack up to 9 h, whereas starved individuals started to attack T. absoluta caterpillars 1 h after their release at both densities. Our findings suggest more effective biological control of T. absoluta is possible with the release of second instar nymphs of P. nigrispinus when starved for 24 h prior to release and then released either in the morning or in the evening.
This study investigated the effects of six weeds [Amaranthus hybridus L., Desmodium tortuosum (Sw.), Euphorbia heterophylla L., Ageratum conyzoides L., Bidens pilosa L., Ricinus communis L.] and the cotton plant Gossypium hirsutum L. CNPA Precocious 1 on Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) life history characteristics and oviposition behavior. The study begun with P. nigrispinus eggs placed on plants and caged throughout up to female death. Egg production and selected plant for oviposition by P. nigrispinus were investigated caging mated females on weeds and cotton plants simultaneously. Nymphal development of P. nigrispinus was shorter on D. tortuosum and longer on A. hybridus. Nymphal viability was not affected by any species of plant studied. Nymphs reared on R. communis produced females weighting less compared to the other plant species. The weed A. conyzoides promoted higher female fecundity compared to those females reared on D. tortuosum, E. heterophylla and R. communis. The demographic parameters net reproductive rate (R o) and mean generation time (T) of P. nigrispinus were higher for females reared on A. conyzoides, while the intrinsic rate of population increase (r m) and finite rate of increase (λ) suggest that better performance of the predator will be yielded on B. pilosa. The weed plants A. hybridus and B. pilosa were significantly preferred by P. nigrispinus females to lay eggs. These results suggest that the weeds A. conyzoides, B. pilosa and A. hybridus can benefit the colonization and maintenance of P. nigrispinus in the cotton ecosystem by phytophagy.
Properties of teakwood of different ages coming from thinningABSTRACT The objective of this work was the determination of some of the properties of the wood of teak (Tectona grandis L. f.) from commercial plantations with four, six and twelve years old considering in the diameter class of 9-13 cm. We evaluated both basic and apparent density at 12% of humidity, anatomical properties (fiber and vessel dimensions, ray height and a qualitative description) and chemical properties (extractives, lignin and cellulose contents and syringyl/guaiacyl ratio). Results showed that only fiber dimensions and lumen diameter of vessels presented statistical difference between ages. Average values found in this study are similar to those reported for teak in the literature. Regardless of age of trees, we concluded wood from the same diameter class presents similar density, chemical properties and some anatomical properties.
