The transversal dimension of the statistical coil formed by a long‐chain molecule in solution or in bulk rubber is independent of the longitudinal dimension, h1, of the coil as long as h1 is small compared with the length of the stretched molecule. On the other hand, the lateral dimension of a coil whose longitudinal vector, h1, is oriented in the direction of stretch undergoes a forced contraction during the deformation of bulk rubber. The forced contraction of the transversal dimension is therefore supplying an extra contribution to the entropy change. Its amount has been estimated in earlier work and it influences the numerical factor occurring in the formula connecting the strain‐stretch relation for rubber with the molecular weight of the net fragments.

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
