An attempted Wittig reaction of o-xylylene-bistriphenylphosphorane with diethyl ketomalonate gave ethyl 3-ethoxy-2-naphthoate, representing formally, a Wittig reaction with an ester carbonyl.

Aus Phthalaldehyd (I) erhält man mit Carbäthoxymethylentriphenylphosphoran (II) das trans,trans‐o‐Phenylen‐diacrylat (I11), dessen photmyse die Reaktionsprodukte (IV)‐(VI) liefert.

Das aus dem entsprechenden Phosphoniumbromid in Gegenwart von Li‐äthylat erhaltene Phosphoniumylid (I) reagiert in situ mit dem Ketoester (II) unter Abspaltung von Triphenylphosphinoxid zu dem Naphthoesäureester (III) (Ausbeute 15%), der spektral und durch Vergleich identifiziert wird.
