Winkler Verlag, München 1984. 349 S., DM/sFr. 36,-. Im Grenzenlos-Ungeheuren der Thomas-Mann-Forschung beginnt dieser Kommentar, Grenzen zu ziehen und Konturen sichtbar zu machen. Er sammelt und ordnet, aber er fügt den Interpretationen keine neuen hinzu. Die Scholien zu den 32 Erzählungen bescheiden sich und verfahren nach dem gleichen Muster: Anmerkungen erläutern das Wortmaterial, Anspielungen und Quellen; die Entstehungsgeschichte wird auf der Basis von Wyslings Dokumenten-Sammlung skizziert und kommentiert; die Analyse der Selbstdeutungen räumt endgültig mit dem Fehlurteil auf, daß der Autor der beste Interpret seiner Werke sei, indem sie die Widersprüchlichkeit und die lebens-und zeitgeschichtlichen Bedingungen aufzeigt; das Kapitel Kontext illustriert den ideologic-, literatur-und werkgeschichtlichen, den biographischen und weniger den sozialgeschichtlichen Stellenwert der einzelnen Erzählungen. Die Qualität eines Arbeits-und Handbuches gewinnt die Sammlung endlich durch ihren umfangreichsten und wichtigsten Teil, der die Rezeption überblickt, und zwar nicht nur die Forschungsliteratur aufarbeitet, sondern auch die zeitgenössische Kritik zitiert, paraphrasiert, gruppiert und deutlich wertend akzentuiert. Was Vaget da an Rezeptionszeugnissen erster Hand präsentiert, erzeugt schlichtweg Spannung. Man kennt zu wenig davon, weil man die entsprechenden Seiten in den einschlägigen Bibliographien rasch überschlagen hat, um endlich zum , Eigentlichen*, zur Fachliteratur zu gelangen. Wirkung hatte aber in erster Linie die Tagespresse: Sie bestimmte das öffentliche Urteil über Thomas Mann, und sie wirkte in die entstehende Forschung hinein. Spannend zu sehen, wie sich diese Topoi, zum Tag und zur Stunde geboren, fortpflanzen ins dritte und vierte Glied. Interessant auch -was Vaget nur höflich andeutet -, daß später immer eine Kamarilla von Haus-und Hofrezensenten am Werk ist, auf die sich der Meister verlassen kann, der nicht selten selbst den Tagesbefehl ausgegeben hat, damit alles recht geschrieben ist in Gottes Buch. Bemerkenswert weiterhin, wie sich die Selbstdeutung dem Tag und der Stunde anschmiegt, wie das Gewagte, das Nicht-mehr-oder Nochnicht-Zeitgemäße vertuscht, verharmlost, verbürgerlicht, das Kühne marktfähig gemacht wird. Aufschlußreich sodann, daß Thomas Mann fast immer, wenn ein Kreuzfeuer loslegt, im ideologischen Kreuzfeuer steht (Wälsungenblut, Die Betrogene).
