A crude polysaccharide fraction (cDOP) has been determined to be the characteristic marker of Dendrobium officinale, an expensive tea material in Asia, but its chemistry and bioactivity have not been studied. In work reported here, cDOP was de-starched (DOP, 90% yield), and separated into two polysaccharides, DOP-1 and DOP-2, which were characterized by monosaccharide composition and methylation analyses, and spectral analyses (FT-IR and 1 H and 13 C NMR). Both are composed of mannose and glucose, at similar ratios; and have a similar structure with a backbone of 1,4-linked β-D-mannopyranosyl and β-D-glucopyranosyl residues. Significant differences were observed only in their molecular weights. Bioassay using mouse macrophage cell line RAW 264.7 indicated that DOP and its two sub-fractions enhance cell proliferation, TNF-α secretion, and phagocytosis in a dose-dependent manner. They also induced the proliferation of lymphocytes alone and with mitogens. DOP-1 and DOP-2 are thus proven to be major, active polysaccharide markers of D. officinale.

A 10‐week feeding experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of supplemental betaine on growth performance, body composition and lipid deposition in allogynogenetic gibel carp. Four isoproteic (37% crude protein) and isolipidic (5% crude lipid) artificial diets with 0%, 0.08%, 0.4% and 2% betaine supplementation were formulated, and named VB0, VB0.08, VB0.4 and VB2, respectively. Each diet was fed in triplicate to fish about 10 g in weight. The results showed that 0.4% betaine supplementation significantly improved growth performance and reduced lipid content in the hepatopancreas, muscle and the whole body compared with the control group. Moreover, both fatty acid synthase and acetyl‐CoA carboxylase, two important lipogenic genes, showed significantly lower expression in the VB0.4 group than in the control group, and a strong correlation was detected between lipid content and mRNA expression levels for FAS and ACC in the hepatopancreas. Taken together, appropriate (0.4%) betaine supplementation in the diet not only improved growth, but also reduced lipid deposition in allogynogenetic gibel carp, probably by diminishing lipogenic gene expression.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of heat stress on the behavioral and physiological patterns in Small-tail Han sheep housed indoors in summer without climate control. Sixteen adult animals were allocated into two groups of eight animals, based on sex: one group of eight rams and one group of eight ewes. Temperature-humidity index (THI) was used to assess the degree of heat stress. All sheep were subjected to a 10-day pre-experimental period of habituation to the experimental feed and environment. Physiological parameters monitored were respiratory rate (RR), rectal temperature (RT), and heart rate (HR). Blood chemistry parameters were also recorded, including plasma minerals and blood metabolites, from jugular vein blood samples. Behavioral parameters were lying, standing, excreting, drinking, foraging, walking, and ruminating. The research findings showed that there were some significant differences of behavior (standing, P = 0.001; walking, P = 0.049; ruminating, P = 0.010), physiology (RR, P = 0.0001; HR, P = 0.002; RT, P = 0.03;) and plasma minerals and blood metabolites (sodium, P = 0.047; phosphorus, P = 0.002; T4, P = 0.041; cortisol, P = 0.0047; triglyceride, P = 0.009) between ram and ewe and that heat stress also significantly affected (P < 0.05) standing, lying, foraging and drinking behavior, all of the physiological parameters and some of the blood chemistry parameters (chlorides, sodium, phosphorus, total protein, tetraiodothyronine, cholesterol, triglyceride, creatinine, cortisol, and glucose). These results indicate that ewe has better high-temperature tolerance than ram, and heat stress can alter behavioral and physiological patterns in Small-tail Han sheep housed indoors. These changes may allow the sheep to adapt better to the ambient temperature.

This study presents the first examination of the genetic structure of Daphnia longispina complex populations in Eastern China. Only one species, D. galeata, was present across the eight investigated lakes; as identified by taxon assignment using allelic variation at 15 microsatellite loci. Three genetically differentiated D. galeata subgroups emerged independent of the type of statistical analysis applied. Thus, Bayesian clustering, discriminant analysis based on results from factorial correspondence analysis, and UPGMA clustering consistently showed that populations from two neighbouring lakes were genetically separated from a mixture of genotypes found in other lakes, which formed another two subgroups. Clonal diversity was high in all D. galeata populations, and most samples showed no deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, indicating that clonal selection had little effect on the genetic diversity. Overall, populations did not cluster by geographical origin. Further studies will show if the observed pattern can be explained by natural colonization processes or by recent anthropogenic impact on predominantly artificial lakes.
