Fleshy fruits are classically divided into climacteric and nonclimacteric types. It has long been thought that the ripening of climacteric and nonclimacteric fruits is regulated by ethylene and abscisic acid (ABA), respectively. Here, we report that sucrose functions as a signal in the ripening of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa), a nonclimacteric fruit.
Pharmacological experiments, as well as gain‐ and loss‐of‐function studies, were performed to demonstrate the critical role of sucrose in the regulation of fruit ripening.
Fruit growth and development were closely correlated with a change in sucrose content. Exogenous sucrose and its nonmetabolizable analog, turanose, induced ABA accumulation in fruit and accelerated dramatically fruit ripening. A set of sucrose transporters, FaSUT1–7, was identified and characterized, among which FaSUT1 was found to be a major component responsible for sucrose accumulation during fruit development. RNA interference‐induced silencing of FaSUT1 led to a decrease in both sucrose and ABA content, and arrested fruit ripening. By contrast, overexpression of FaSUT1 led to an increase in both sucrose and ABA content, and accelerated fruit ripening.
In conclusion, this study demonstrates that sucrose is an important signal in the regulation of strawberry fruit ripening.
Mental health promotion of economically disadvantaged youths is a popular issue in current China. Economically disadvantaged youths are at greater risk of depression. Ostracism may be an important predictor of depression for them. However, no consensus has been reached on the underlying mechanism between ostracism and depression. A total of 1207 economically disadvantaged youths were recruited from six universities in China. These youths were asked to complete questionnaires measuring depression, ostracism, psychological capital, and perceived social support. A moderated mediation model was examined by using IBM SPSS STATISTICS 27macro program PROCESS version 3.5, in which psychological capital was a mediating variable, and perceived social support was a moderating variable. Lack of causal inferences and self-report bias due to the cross-sectional and self-report survey need to be considered when interpreting results. The results revealed that ostracism was positively associated with depression among economically disadvantaged youths. Psychological capital partially mediated the association. Perceived social support moderated the indirect association between ostracism and depression via psychological capital among economically disadvantaged females. Training and intentional practice of psychological capital could be the core to develop the depression interventions targeting economically disadvantaged youths with experience of ostracism. Gender and perceived social support need to be considered in developing the interventions.
In this paper, an intelligent water shooting robot system for situations of carrier shake and target movement is designed, which uses a 2 DOF (degree of freedom) robot as an actuator, a photoelectric camera to detect and track the desired target, and a gyroscope to keep the robot’s body stable when it is mounted on the motion carriers. Particularly, for the accurate shooting of the designed system, an online tuning model of the water jet landing point based on the back-propagation algorithm was proposed. The model has two stages. In the first stage, the polyfit function of Matlab is used to fit a model that satisfies the law of jet motion in ideal conditions without interference. In the second stage, the model uses the back-propagation algorithm to update the parameters online according to the visual feedback of the landing point position. The model established by this method can dynamically eliminate the interference of external factors and realize precise on-target shooting. The simulation results show that the model can dynamically adjust the parameters according to the state relationship between the landing point and the desired target, which keeps the predicted pitch angle error within 0.1°. In the test on the actual platform, when the landing point is 0.5 m away from the position of the desired target, the model only needs 0.3 s to adjust the water jet to hit the target. Compared to the state-of-the-art method, GA-BP (genetic algorithm-back-propagation), the proposed method’s predicted pitch angle error is within 0.1 degree with 1/4 model parameters, while costing 1/7 forward propagation time and 1/200 back-propagation calculation time.
Language-supervised vision models have recently attracted great attention in computer vision. A common approach to build such models is to use contrastive learning on paired data across the two modalities, as exemplified by Contrastive Language-Image Pre-Training (CLIP). In this paper, under linear representation settings, (i) we initiate the investigation of a general class of nonlinear loss functions for multimodal contrastive learning (MMCL) including CLIP loss and show its connection to singular value decomposition (SVD). Namely, we show that each step of loss minimization by gradient descent can be seen as performing SVD on a contrastive cross-covariance matrix. Based on this insight, (ii) we analyze the performance of MMCL. We quantitatively show that the feature learning ability of MMCL can be better than that of unimodal contrastive learning applied to each modality even under the presence of wrongly matched pairs. This characterizes the robustness of MMCL to noisy data. Furthermore, when we have access to additional unpaired data, (iii) we propose a new MMCL loss that incorporates additional unpaired datasets. We show that the algorithm can detect the ground-truth pairs and improve performance by fully exploiting unpaired datasets. The performance of the proposed algorithm was verified by numerical experiments.
