The introduced biological control agent Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) has attained pest status in North America as its presence in vineyards during harvest may compromise the quality of the resulting wine. Control of H. axyridis in vineyards is difficult as their populations may fluctuate daily, and there are few products registered to control this pest. Sulfur dioxide, in the form of potassium metabisulfite (KMS), is commonly used in wine as both an antimicrobial and an antioxidant. In this study, the effectiveness of KMS as a repellent against H. axyridis was measured. In a Y-tube olfactometer, H. axyridis spent significantly less time in the treatment arm (KMS 2.5, 5, and 10 g/liter) than in the control arm during a 10-min period. When sprayed in a vineyard, KMS significantly reduced the number of H. axyridis on grape vines. KMS is an effective repellent against H. axyridis and may be suitable for use in vineyards to control this pest. KMS (5 g/liter) applied to Riesling grapes at 2 wk, 1 wk, 3 d, or 1 d before harvest did not affect free sulfur dioxide in either freshly processed or settled juice. This study lays the foundation for the development of a pest management strategy incorporating repellents for H. axyridis in vineyards.
Ascospore discharge was monitored from black knots excised from sour cherry trees in May 1992 and 1993, and March, April, and May 1994 and 1995. Rain, temperature, and wetness duration were monitored and a regression model was developed to describe the relationship between environmental conditions and ascospore discharge. Regardless of the date of excision, the peak period for ascospore release occurred from late May (shuck split) through the end of June (shoots 20 cm long), considerably later than previously reported from knots on plum. Fewer ascospores were released from knots excised in early March compared to later dates in 1994. In 1995, the spring was much warmer than in 1994 and ascospore release from March-excised knots was comparable to that from knots excised later in the spring. The period of release and total number of ascospores released was similar from non-excised knots and from knots excised in April or May 1994. Release of ascospores was dependent on rainfall and temperature, but not on the duration of wetness.
The multicoloured Asian lady beetle, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), has become a pest in North American vineyards during harvest due to its adverse effects on wine quality. This study evaluated alternative products that may be suitable for use in vineyards as repellents to the beetle. Products were screened as repellent for multicoloured Asian lady beetle in short-term laboratory trials. Thirteen products significantly reduced the number of beetles on grapes, Vitis vinifera (Vitaceae). Products that showed a 50% or greater repellency were evaluated for residual repellency 24, 48, and 72 hours after application. In these trials, pine oil was highly repellent at each testing period, whereas the repellency of most other products decreased over time. Eight repellent compounds were evaluated in field trials in commercial vineyards that had high multicoloured Asian lady beetle populations. The number of beetles on vines was counted 2–6 and 24–28 hours after application. In the field, the most effective repellents overall were Biobenton and Buran, which reduced the number of multicoloured Asian lady beetles by 39 and 34%, respectively. The discovery of new repellents of multicoloured Asian lady beetle provides an opportunity to improve management of the pest in vineyards and to reduce risk of wine taint without using broad-spectrum insecticides.
