El campo de las misiones entre infieles ha caracterizado la actividad de los jesuitas en toda su historia. Su origen está en la Misión con mayúsculas, como consecuencia del cuarto voto de obediencia especial al papa circa missiones (específico de esta orden religiosa), del que es una de sus primeras concreciones. Por ello, pretendemos estudiar los orígenes de este ministerio en san Ignacio de Loyola. Nos fijaremos especialmente en dos temas: uno de ellos, con un significado especial para el fundador, fue la misión de Etiopía, para la que elaboró unas completas instrucciones, modelo de su modo propio de actuar. El otro, lo que después se ha llamado inculturación, de la que encontramos en san Ignacio los primeros apuntes.
