Furofuran lignans containing the 2,6-diaryl-3,7-dioxabicyclo[3.3.0]octane skeleton, represent one of the major subclasses of the lignan family of natural products. Furofuran lignans feature a wide variety of structures due to different substituents at aryl groups and diverse configurations at furofuran ring. Moreover, they exhibit a wide range of significant biological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, and antimicrobial activities. This review summarizes source, phytochemistry, and biological activities of 137 natural furofuran lignans isolated from 53 species in 41 genera of 27 plant families for the last 20 years, which provides a comprehensive information for further research of these furofuran lignans as potential pharmaceutical agents.
The genus Croton belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family, which comprises approximately 1300 species. Many Croton species have been used as folk medicines. This review focuses on the chemical constituents from Croton species and their relevant biological activities, covering the period from 2006 to 2018. A total of 399 new compounds, including 339 diterpenoids, were reported. Diterpenoids are characteristic components of the Croton species. These isolated compounds exhibited a broad spectrum of bioactivities, including cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, acetylcholinesterase inhibitory, and neurite outgrowth-promoting properties. The present review provides a significant clue for further research of the chemical constituents from the Croton species as potential medicines.
This review documents chemical structures and antifungal activities of 68 compounds isolated from 22 Piper species of the plant family Piperaceae. These compounds include amides, flavonoids, prenylated benzoic acid derivatives, lignans, phenylpropanoids, butenolides, and cyclopentendiones. Some of them may serve as leads for potential pharmaceutical or agricultural fungicide development.
