A B S T R A C TThe use of saline water for irrigation causes severe restriction to nutritional balance, growth and production in many crops due to the effect of salts on plant and soil. The objective of this study was to investigate the response of melon (Cucumis melo L.) cultivars to various levels of irrigation water salinity on yield and fruit quality. A field experiment was conducted in a split-plot randomized block design with four replicates. The factors were five levels of irrigation water salinity (0.54, 1.48, 2.02, 3.03 and 3.90 dS m -1 ) in the plots and five melon cultivars (C 1 -Sancho -Pele de sapo; C 2 -Medellín -Pele de sapo; C 3 -Mandacaru -Canary; C 4 -Néctar -Galia; C 5 -Sedna -Cantaloupe) in the sub-plots. According to the results, among the five genotypes studied, Sancho was the most salt-tolerant genotype, followed by Mandacaru, Medellín, Sedna and Néctar. Since irrigation water salinity did not influence the mean fruit weight, the reduction in the number of fruits was the main cause of yield reduction of the melon crop under high salinity water. The contents of total soluble solids increased under high salinity level. Key words:relative crop yield water quality salt stress Cucumis melo L. Contamination of vineyard soils by the continuous use of cupric fungicides and fertilizers has been a worldwide concern. The objective of this study was to determine the total concentration of Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Ni and Pb from vineyard soils of a semiarid region in Brazil. Soil samples at 0-20 and 20-40 cm depth were collected in areas under 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 16 and 30 years of cultivation, and compared with native vegetation areas. Samples were digested and total metal concentrations were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. In general, concentrations of Mn, Ni, Fe and Pb were similar to those values found in the reference area, being regarded as background concentrations. On the other hand, Zn and Cu were mainly derived from the widespread use of fertilizers (e.g., phosphate application) and cupric fungicides, respectively. Discriminant analysis clearly demonstrated higher metal accumulation in surface soil samples, chiefly Zn and Cu owing to Zn and Cu-containing chemicals and accumulation of organic matter. This tool was also useful to differentiate between natural and anthropogenic inputs of metals into soils. The high enrichment factor values for Cu and Zn showed that both were mainly derived from anthropogenic sources.
SUMMARYThe lack of a standard method to regulate heavy metal determination in Brazilian fertilizers and the subsequent use of several digestion methods have produced variations in the results, hampering interpretation. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of three digestion methods for determination of metals such as Cd, Ni, Pb, and Cr in fertilizers. Samples of 45 fertilizers marketed in northeastern Brazil were used. A fertilizer sample with heavy metal contents certified by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) was used as control. The following fertilizers were tested: rock phosphate; organo-mineral fertilizer with rock phosphate; single superphosphate; triple superphosphate; mixed N-P-K fertilizer; and fertilizer with micronutrients. The substances were digested according to the method recommended by the Ministry for Agriculture, Livestock and Supply of Brazil (MAPA) and by the two methods 3051A and 3052 of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). By the USEPA method 3052, higher portions of the less soluble metals such as Ni and Pb were recovered, indicating that the conventional digestion methods for fertilizers underestimate the total amount of these elements. The results of the USEPA method 3051A were very similar to those of the method currently used in Brazil (Brasil, 2006). The latter is preferable, in view of the lower cost requirement for acids, a shorter digestion period and greater reproducibility.Index terms: soil contamination, soil pollution, chemical extraction.
Cultivation can substantially change soil quality through improvement or degradation of the physical and chemical characteristics. Vineyard soils are sensitive to soil changes due to the intensive chemical input. This study assesses the soil fertility changes in vineyard soils of the São Francisco valley in Northeastern Brazil during different cultivation time spans (5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, and 16 years). An area with natural vegetation (Caatinga) was used as a reference area. We analyzed pH, exchangeable contents of Ca, Mg, Na, K, and Al, potential acidity (H+Al), available P, total organic matter, sum of bases, CEC, Al saturation, and base saturation at depths of 0-20 and 20-40 cm. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used for data evaluation. The results showed that soil fertility changes were closely related to cultivation time spans. Contents of organic matter, Ca, Mg, and K were increased in most of the vineyard soils. The management of P fertilization deserves attention as the very high concentrations in soil are prone to leach and can contribute to triggering eutrophication. Discriminant and factor analyses proved to be useful tools for distinguishing the effects of management in the cultivated areas and helping to achieve sustainable land use in such fragile agro-ecosystems.
